infomodding

infomodding

infomodding

and for big things yeah you can go to the mods. but sometimes it's not that obvious/something you can 'prove', or not worth the effort of complaining about. characters knowing or responding to information in narration or even ooc notes/subject lines. characters suddenly invested in becoming an expert on x when they never showed any interest before, coincidentally after someone else announced a plot concerning x. people dropping cr after it's revealed that the other character's going to do something shady in the future, even though icly they have no reason to stop trusting them yet.

it's by turns boring, annoying, and frustrating as fuck. makes me not want to reveal too much about my character or their plans for fear of people taking advantage of that ooc knowledge to use it against them ic, or stealing plotlines out from under me.

please be aware of the difference between ic knowledge and ooc knowledge. don't take advantage of what you know oocly to constantly make your character the smartest one in the room or have their fingers in every pie, especially not when it's stealing someone else's thunder. and don't have your character be a dick preemptively to characters who haven't shown their hands yet. it's ok for your character to be wrong sometimes. ic misunderstandings are interesting, and characters who mysteriously know exactly what the right thing to do is, or who they should and shouldn't trust, emphatically are not.

I'm already hiding as much as I can get away with about my plans, for the exact reasons you listed up there.

My favorite was a Sherlock who was infomodding me but clearly only knew the more widely known bits of my canon and not the stuff that had to do with my character's actual canonpoint. So his "brilliant deduction" was actually pretty wrong because they didn't know enough.

The worst subtle infomodder I know is a mod. There's one character in particular who always knows people are hiding something, whether it's major secrets or how they're feeling. It's just always framed as "what sneaky thing aren't you telling us" instead of "you're not telling us X sneaky thing!" so it's much harder to avoid. Constantly denying whatever it is IC is pretty funny, though, since they clearly don't know what to do with a response other than immediate and complete confessions.

To be entirely fair I think there's a difference between dropping cr and having your character icly react to things before they happen. If you just meant the latter, I'm on board with that. But I don't see anything wrong with oocly pulling back, even if you don't have an ic reason, if you get wind that something's coming that just isn't going to be fun for you to play with. If I'm not interested in playing out some plot where my character's new casual friend suddenly goes on a murder spree and I had no idea getting into the cr that that was a possibility, I shouldn't have to.

The trick is to not turn it into some ic thing, though, so yeah people who cross that line are annoying assholes ruining everyone else's fun. But dropping cr quietly is fine.

You know, you could just ask someone to hold their tag if there's something you want to respond to, instead of being passive aggressive about how much it sucks that you never get a chance to tag into things and guilt tripping a really fucking nice person into standing down just so your character can do the thing. That's so shitty.

Players who treat every interaction like a contest. Their character can never be wrong, they can never get angry or frustrated, they always have some witty retort prepared, and god forbid an actual fight breaks out. I've learned my lesson about never starting any spur-of-the-moment fights with players I haven't thoroughly plotted with, even if it's just a minor scuffle.

I play a character that likes to try and get a rise out of other people, so half of my threads end up like this. I don't even mind or care about my character looking bad in the end or one of their attempts backfiring, but I'd rather give those threads to people who know how to give a little back instead of playing against a brick wall. If all you care about is making your character look better than mine, you're going to the bottom of the inbox.

please, for the love of god, stop answering my text in brackets with your text in brackets. that is the most annoying as fuck habit ever and makes me want to e-cat you with [blinks] and "..." and "ok."

the characters are not having some unspoken bracket conversation. you're not playing a telepath. your bracket text should have nothing to do with my bracket text other than to state what your character is doing in reaction to what mine is doing.

enough people do this that somebody needs to stage a bad rp intervention so they stop feeding off of each other and thinking this is how you rp. there is almost nothing else beyond egregious breaches of boundaries that will make me try to wrap up a thread faster and avoid your cr in the future than this.

Piggybacking on the anons above me, info-dumping backstory or whole paragraphs of how your character's life sucked ass or was so traumatic in the middle of tags that have nothing to do with either. If my character is interested enough in the other character, THEY'LL ASK. But don't force me to read five paragraphs that wildly derail into oblivion, in response to one sentence that might rub your character the wrong way. JUST GIVE ME VISUAL CUES THAT MY CHARACTER CAN PICK UP ON FIRST.

This doesn't happen to me often, but by god when it does there's nothing that will make me check out of the thread faster. Short of just ripping out my character's heart with your teeth and stomping on their dead corpse for no reason.

Games are my pet peeve. Maybe I just have shit luck but I always run into the same problems. Flakes who play well, mediocre players who are boring as shit but at least respond fast enough for you to have character development, whining tittybabies who only show their true form after you've decided they're pretty okay, mods who can't function with how their game develops despite what they wanted it to be, and finally small as fuck playerbases that make making AC next to impossible because of everything mentioned before.

I just want to have fun. Why is this hobby so stressful?

canon updates being allowed in games where it doesn't make sense

if the game's premise says that everybody's home worlds were destroyed or are in some kind of danger, having people going back home and returning with new memories completely invalidates that, and nothing in the world will get my character to believe their home is really gone or in danger

at least make it so updated characters lose their in-game memories with no chance of regaining them, so that as far as other characters are concerned they're a new version and not somebody who left and came back

Some players in my small game are grumbling how no one wants to play out their (boring and slow) plot after we've just had two or three plot-intensive months. Apparently, the fact that the rest of the game is burnt out doesn't compute with them. We are not your fun dispensers.

i've said it before and i'll say it again. if i have a top level that's ambiguous in nature and gives a character a chance to make up their own version of events or add their own scenario, have them do something that would make my character notice theirs. your character noticing my character and not saying or doing anything about it is one of the shittiest ways to reply. you are replying to me, so give me something to reply to. especially if i have a character that isn't going to give two shits that your char 'notices' mine. do something. drop something. say something. have them trip and fall on their face. have a bird fly by and shit on them. i don't care, but do something that isn't 'exists in char's vicinity and happens to notice them'. i don't know what to do with that other than give in to my urge to ignore it.

you enabled me to this game to be in your cast, instantly went on hiatus after i got in and are now talking about dropping. why the fuck did you enable me if you knew you were suffering from burnout in the first place?

no, i don't want to psl. you've already proven you're a massive flake. at least there are enough people in the game who aren't to make it worth staying.

I adore my smallish game but I'm getting increasingly put off by one of its most active players going all PROTAGSQUAD on every. single. plot. And also the modplurks. And now apparently getting upset at people not being able to keep up with them or dropping their player plots... please sit down, this isn't a fast-paced game to begin with.

more intro post pet peeving because this is a topic that never stops being relevant

"Gimme advice!!" is not a valid intro post for a game in which the setting provides the characters with info and advice from the start. i don't mind it in games where the characters wake up and actually don't know what's going on, because what else are they gonna do. but this?

characters are, upon arrival, given a lot of info they can process. they're getting directions where to go and what they can do. why the fuck is your intro still "what do i do now?" with NO other hooks??

it's one thing if a character can icly not be bothered to check the info, but for characters who WOULD read it, it just makes them look dumb as fuck when they don't react to any of the input they were given

reading the setting page saves lives
seriously
do it

the pettiest of pet peeves, but i hate when i'm writing a smut thread with someone and they use a really unfitting or unattractive icon. especially when you wouldn't expect that icon to come up in smut either, like one where their character is covered in blood or something.

it's still preferable to an icon of nothing but genitals or gratuitous nipple shots, but it still bugs me since that's how i imagine their character's face is at the moment and it ruins the flow of the thread for me.

Thanks, I'm totally hyped to be ignored by/forced into handwaving instead of actually threading with castmates. Not like I got hyped to join because of the cast. Not like the canon left a ton of shit in the table that needs dealing with especially for my guy. Not like it's killing my drive to stay in this fucking game.

Nah.

Keep apping your flakey ass to more games with more characters when you're outright ignoring the games and characters you have already. Keep talking up and squeeing over shit you're never going to get around to actually doing.
