Why is there always some chucklehead who obsesses in the FAQ over hypothetical situations that will never come up? I thought it was just my game, but looking at other game FAQs, it's a common and annoying trend. If that sort of thing is actually going to affect your character in the near future, sure, ask away. But stop wasting our time with your flailing and hyperventilating over one little nitpicky thing that just ain't gonna happen, dude.

Because there are a lot of obsessive, nitpicky weirdos in this hobby.

Amen to that.

i really wish there was a way to ban these types (aka the frans who angrily yell about weather accuracy) from games when they technically aren't doing anything. it's really what's preventing me from modding a game since i typically find them overall insufferable as players and poor rpers that don't work well with others and drag down the quality of the game to boot. :(

At some point you just have to disengage and leave them hanging, their pithy questions forever left unanswered because no one cares.

Create a specific thread for minor, non time-sensitive questions, and make it clear you'll get to those... whenever you feel like it.

Then people can furiously ask about stupid nitpicky things they could simply handwave on their own all you want, you can ignore it, and if something actually interesting comes up in those, you can address it.

ridiculously nitpicky players are the worst

also, players who like to push the boundaries of the game. you read all the info before you apped (presumably) so either play within the provided constraints or gtfo

ugh, THIS. I don't mind the occasional suggestion on how to improve the game, but some players seem to think every game should adapt itself to their own preferences and no one else's, then throw a fit when the mod says no.

because i like to see how mods would handle weird situations

it's like a reverse application!

go away, get a life, and stop wasting my time. this shit is annoying.

Agreed. As a mod, I try to prioritize game duties over my personal player tags. I'd rather focus on those tags than answer someone's crazy hypothetical questions that have no bearing on the game or the characters.

most of those are the nitpicky players the anons above mentioned

but a few a those questions aren't hypothetical in theory - they do want to do the thing, and they end up not doing because they didn't like your answer

then don't ask a bunch of apparently random questions and hope the mods give you the answers you want.

go to them with your plot idea and see if there's any way you can work things out instead. there's usually some room for the answer to be different if there's an actual coherent reason for the question, and not just some nutbar apparently obsessing over the minute details of the game setting's flowering bushes.

A misguided sense of excitement for the game geared towards world-building, sometimes. Also what anon above said about 'they'd have done a thing but your answer didn't work well with their hypothetical plot.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
idk about others but sometimes I wind up asking questions I think are going to be relevant but then things happen that take my plans away from those things.

Unrelated but kudos on the use of "chucklehead" as an insult.

People who ask how long app processing is going to take... like right after they submit their app.

Chill the fuck out, we're getting to it. If it's been a week and there's been no change in the app page, THEN you have a reason to ask. Otherwise? Shut up and be patient like everyone else, we're not 24/7 app-reading machines.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe they just want to know what the average turnaround is so they can plan appropriately. Since many games have rules about how long you have to reply to revisions or to comment to the taken page to not have your app rescinded, it's actually understandable to want to be sure you'll be available when that acceptance comes.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Most games also give you an app review window. If you're not going to be around for long enough to revise or comment to the taken page during that window, you should probably hold off on apping instead of annoying the fuck out of the mods.

Re: MODS' PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, a lot of games don't have anything like that and can vary widely. Many games also have app cycles so people can't really hold off if they want to get in that cycle. Also another part is to be able to plan around RL obligations and stuff in other games. The other thing is that not everyone is glued to their emails or inboxes, so if a mod team is fast about a response, it's not impossible to miss a revision window if they expected a week and the mods get back in a day or two. The point is, most people who ask aren't doing it to pressure mods into processing apps faster, they just want an idea of how long it will be so they can plan appropriately since an intro is going to be starting a bunch of new threads.

Re: MODS' PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
nah. most people who do it are absolutely doing it because they're impatient little fucks who want the mods to process apps faster.

and checking your e-mail maybe once a day is "glued to your inbox" now? if you can't check at least that often, you don't belong in games anyway. so again, hold off on apping, you moron.

This isn't always a question asked to push the app. It's a logistics issue. If you, as a mod, don't want to deal with this, you might want to consider including somewhere in your app page average turnaround time for apps or when it's appropriate to ask or give a poke.

A lot of people don't ask this question to be pushy or difficult. They're juggling work, RL obligations, and other games.
