And then this becomes frustrating if the person honestly does intend to play the character for a length of time but it turns out they didn't have as strong of a voice for the character as they thought or the character didn't fit in the game as well as they thought.

I know I've done this because sometimes it does take a couple of attempts before I find a character who fits me and the game well. What looks like it will fit well when I'm writing the app doesn't always pan out as well as I thought it would in the game. I'd rather drop when I realize this than string people along and play a character I'm not having fun with. Then I try again with another character who looks like they'd work well and it becomes harder and harder to get CR and makes it more likely subsequent attempts will fail.

Really, I think people should take more into consideration than just oh, they dropped the character real fast. For example, I'm only in one game, so time constraints are unlikely an issue. The characters aren't from fad canons, so I'm not as likely to move on to new shiny. I also have a character I've been playing more long term, so I can stick with a character just fine. I'm tagging around to other characters as well and trying to get involved in plot, so maybe I truly am giving it a go and not lying if I say the character doesn't fit as well as I thought.

Not that I don't get the other side that it kind of sucks to try and build CR with someone who is going to just drop. Just saying to look at more factors than just the fact that the person has dropped a few characters to see if they are just having a hard time finding a character who fits well or are actually a flake.

THIS. I have two potential castmates who are both afraid to app because they're not 100% sure they could keep the characters around for a long time and they don't want to be seen as flakes. Fuck that, I'd rather have them give it a shot and have it not work out, because at least I would get to play with the castmates for a little while even if it doesn't work.

I hate the actual flakes who have given people who drop a character after a month or two a bad name. If someone is active in a game with one or more other characters that have been around for a while, they're not a flake for dropping a character that didn't work out.

Outside of maybe one of my characters who doesn't handle loss well, I'd definitely agree that it's better to get to play with some castmates for a time than not at all.

Now I have seen some people that are definitely worthy of side-eying when they app a new character. Like one person I know who dropped a character because they realized they didn't enjoy playing a character of X type. Okay, that's cool, except not too long after that they turned around and apped another character of X type and of course soon after drop them. I get that not every character works out for a player, but if X type of character isn't for you, don't go and app another character like that and think things will be different. If you just need a few attempts to find a character that works, then at least show you are learning from your mistakes and try characters who don't share things in common with the characters you dropped. If you find you suck at getting an antisocial character out there, then don't app another antisocial character to replace them. Try and figure out what didn't work and app a character who doesn't have those traits.
