no, that's not the only reason and tbh, it's kind of an ass move for you to call it stupid when plenty of people do it. there's also no listing of where in the canon people are playing from, so maybe some people want to pm to say 'oh, hey, could you maybe not react to my character's death/do you want me to react to your character's death/where in the canon are you?' since canon points can vary from person to person and checking in with castmates as to what's allowed and what makes everyone comfortable can make things go a lot easier. it can also help someone decide if they even want to app in, since i've met plenty of people that refuse to update past certain points because of character development or deaths or any number of things. if they see everyone's up ahead of them, they might be disinclined to app.

there are really a lot of reasons why someone might want to contact potential castmates and i'm really sorry, but you and other anons' constant refusal of that and saying they should just deal with it and app in anyway is kind of unfair.

and not that i agree with it, but i've seen plenty of people that think that writing for a game that has app caps, for example, can be a waste of time, so some people are really up their butts about their time and what they consider a waste and i think a lot would be pretty upset to app in and not find out until after that fact that they're not compatible.
