poll: ideal wordcount on an OC app

(Anonymous) 2017-03-07 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
how much is too much when you don't have a wiki to link back to? sometimes it feels like OC apps overdo it on the length when it comes to their world and personality sections. the impression I get is that the players feel like they have to cover all their bases since their app is the closest thing to a "canon reference" others can check back to when measuring their consistency in game, but at what point do you feel it becomes excessive?

i personally tried to keep my oc app at around 5000 words. i'll condense stuff for mod convenience but have additional info linked around my journal.

some tips are to avoid straying too far from the character you're playing. don't go too deep into the backstory of their parents or best friend or whatever and just focus on the oc you intend to app. avoid too many unnecessary names as too many can get confusing after a while.

it depends on what you want from them. the 'over wordcount' part usually comes from the history/world section, since that's a thing mods ask for and most everyone else can just link a wiki or link a short wiki and then do a few bullet points. most oc players go overboard with words/info because they're the ones that used to constantly get revisions on 'not enough info', so it just became the norm to put everything ever about them in an app so keep from having a mod ask for what could often be a nitpicky revision over family relationships or life goals or 'but what was high school REALLY like for them'.

take out the history/world part and an oc app is usually on par with most canon apps. so if mods want to read less, they're going to either need to look for a 'bullet points of relevant facts only' history/world section, or figure out another way to ask or actually accept limited info without nitpicking over 'not enough' or 'not what we wanted' if they're not asking for it. an oc player is usually going to go with overkill as opposed to a potential rejection.

one game I was in put a word limit of 3,000 on the history section of their app and people griped about it, but from what I saw it was definitely enough to fit everything.

this rper i know keeps threatening to kill themselves. they've done it multiple times just to get attention or to manipulate people and have never been to a psych ward in their life.

what's a good way to get them to cut that the fuck out?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-08 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
if you know their name and where they live, just call the fucking cops on them

Please note: I don't headcanon Pidge as 14, I lean more towards 16-17.

...that's not how headcanon works

(Anonymous) 2017-03-08 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
why are all pidges so fucking shitty with their heads in the sand about everything? first it's her gender and now it's her age, like, if you don't like the canon material so much why bother to even play her at all?

Oh, from the rpanons thread? Yeah... I was side-eyeing too. Like holy shit, people, age her up or admit you want to rp sexual situations with a 14 year old character.

Quit constantly talking about a character that no one cares about. Some people want to hear what's going on in your life than your obsessions with that one character in a tiny fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-08 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I shan't. Look at my son, pride is not the word I'm looking for, etc.

real talk though why not engage them yourself instead of being mad that theh love a thing

(Anonymous) 2017-03-08 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
but there isn't anything going on in my life

it's just boring routine every single day and i'd rather talk about my favorite character

but then some other anon would come in here screeching about how you're talking about rl instead of rp and they didn't follow you for that

(Anonymous) 2017-03-09 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
this is the literal reverse of what people usually complain about on here

(Anonymous) 2017-03-09 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
is it

is it Opposite Day today, wg?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-09 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
so... liking something from a canon you don't makes them over invested? maybe they just have their plurk for rp only because damn, some of you all are salty fucks about needing to know everything about someone's life. some people like to keep their rp separate from their rl.

personally, i find you breathing heavily over them sharing more rl info creepier and more disturbing than someone happy to play with an indie char.

why do live action teenage characters always seem older than anime ones of the same age, and i don't even mean it in a thirty year old actor playing a 16 year old kid kind of way.

like, la teens are all hard partying grizzled college seniors while anime teens are borderline nyaaing infants. i don't find either portrayal compelling or accurate to what kids act like, but there it is.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-09 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
cultural differences maybe?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-09 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
creepy american adults and creepy japanese adults have different fantasies about teenagers.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-09 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
culture, basically

american culture has a weird preoccupation with high school being ~the best time of your life~ and a heavy focus on socialization and hierarchy as opposed to academia, hence all the partying and shit. also don't forget the focus on having as much sex as possible, or whatever (idk it's been a while since i've watched an LA programme that was focused on teenagers, so i'm going by teen wolf, sorry)

japanese culture has a different view on schooling in general. high pressure to succeed, less focus on partying, etc etc, so while there are definitely "slacker" characters, they're not always painted as positive or "cool," really. slackers are looked down on and chastised, for the most part, unless it's a shounen manga and the slacker is the hero or some shit. even then, they'll likely be the source of scolding for not conforming to expectations of a high school student, or whatever. sex and crap is a Thing, but unless it's an ecchi or hentai series, it probably just gets reduced to boob jokes
