i've not once ever had to ask about a ship that wasn't in someone's stated preferences, i only ever do so when there's an RL taboo aspect to the ship. it's worked out for me pretty much 100% of the time.
i guess sheith could fall into that depending on how you interpret their canon relationship. i dropped the show in season 2, but i've heard everything from "shiro raised keith with adam" to "he helped keith out a couple times before he disappeared".
shiro took keith under his wing. it wasn't raising, but he definitely was more involved than just being his math teacher. some people do consider it the ship a bit uncomfortable for their tastes.
forgot to add, one of the EPs literally said that since shiro was involved in keith's formative years, keith isn't capable of leaving the relationship (unlike adam). which some people were reblogging as very romantic, and i find that a bit fucked up tbh. ignoring a random interview to rp what you like? that's fine and we all do it but people quoting that as a good thing i don't understand.
i don't play from this fandom; but this is the part that bothers me the most. at this point is feels like grooming to say that they're a romantic item, and I don't want that shit anywhere near me.
if i came across them in a game, i'd refuse to play with either of them. that's just a Hard No for me.
If it's pearl-clutching to be grossed out by a guy dating the younger guy that he helped raise? Yeah, I'll clutch those pearls.
To me, Shiro has always read as a father/older brother figure to Keith. That's not going to change just because Keith barely moves out of adolescence and now you want the dicks to touch.
anon, i barely go here, but i know enough about voltron to know that shiro didn't "raise" keith. mentor figure, yes, but that's different from being someone's actual fucking parent. and for the record, it is 100% okay to not like the ship because of their canon relationship set up. it's okay to not be down with that. but saying he "raised" him is really disingenuous.
it's okay to not like the ship and not have to exaggerate the less kosher parts of it so you can have a moral high ground on top of not liking it.
Okay, mentor, whatever. I don't really care what you want to call it. "Raised", "father figure", "mentor", sure. He was someone that Keith looked up to, respected, was there to give guidance, looked out for him... However you want to word that, I don't particularly care. The inherent dynamic in that still creeps me out.
a lot of sheith shippers take aspects of shiro's failed relationship with adam and twist it to make keith seem like a better romantic partner for shiro.
namely the fact that adam broke up with shiro because of his insistence of going on the kerberos mission in spite of his degenerative muscle disease. they've framed the ultimatum that adam issued of "if you go into space, don't expect me to be here waiting for you" as adam more wanting shiro to give up his dream than you know. everything else it's about.
not only that, but they also frame a lot of keith's unhealthy thoughts towards shiro as romantic.
they've definitely soured the ship for me :\ not to the point i hate it, but i just roll my eyes and mute it whenever it comes across my twitter feed now
i agree with everything you've said but you must admit, it was canon that made the adam vs keith relationship contrast in 7x1. right after watching that episode was the only time i ever thought "wait, are they going for sheith after all"? since before that i never thought they would (not even with the ilu since they added the brother line to make it clear what it means). it probably has to do with the fact it was animated while adam was still only shiro's bff and the dialogue was changed very shortly before release, so they probably were comparing shiro's friendships (which even then they shouldn't because like you say, keith is bordering on obsession and adam left only because he didn't want to see shiro destroy himself and wanted to be respected). now that more stuff has been said and episodes have been released it's clear to me again that it won't be happening but 7x1 by its own was very... yeah.
oh yeah, definitely. dreamworks definitely did not do a good job of presenting shiro and adam's relationship in comparison to shiro and keith's. even then, you shouldn't compare their relationships because removing any romantic elements, shiro and adam's relationship is one that started with them as equals whereas even if you're a sheith shipper, there's no getting around the fact that shiro and keith started their relationship with shiro being keith's mentor of sorts.
they may be equals now, but there's a different dynamic than if they started as equals originally.
the fact that adam broke up with shiro because of his insistence of going on the kerberos mission in spite of his degenerative muscle disease. they've framed the ultimatum that adam issued of "if you go into space, don't expect me to be here waiting for you" as adam more wanting shiro to give up his dream than you know. everything else it's about.
i don't mind sheith in itself, but god i fucking hate when sheith fans shit on adam and act like he's the devil for (apparently) not having been shiro's ~perfectly understanding and devoted boyfriend~.
it makes me think that these "fans" project their own mental/emotional issues on shiro and adam's relationship, especially since i've seen many that "adam was a selfish asshole for not waiting for shiro" and "if adam truly loved shiro he wouldn't have ~abandoned~ our ill precious gay asian woobie!" and "keith loves shiro more than adam ever did!!! he'd never leave him!! waaaaahhhh!!"
i feel like they're projecting onto shiro because of the woobie status. its like the ship with keith is about them projecting, than actually writing the characters, which puts me off a lot of shippers who have this attitude about adam. you know how every ship has a faction where one character is treated as the prize the other has to take care of? that's how i feel these people see it and it makes the ship feel awkward.
>you know how every ship has a faction where one character is treated as the prize the other has to take care of
that's definitely the case here. sheith is something mostly keith fans/players ship, just like lance is mostly something lance fans/players ship. not saying there aren't others that like them too, but that's definitely something you'll find around. i think it says a lot that it's usually shiros that don't ship sheith.
but yeah tumblr took the shiro thing personally because shiro is is a symbol of disability and not catering to that apparently makes you an asshole. someone in plurk was actually offended that the garrison didn't want to send a sick man into space. how dare they.
I think you're living in a very delusional place if you think it's just Keith shippers who like Sheith. Most of the Sheith fans on Tumblr prefer Shiro to Keith, and I've only seen one Shiro player in DWRP who doesn't like Sheith (many list it first in their preferences for what they'd like to play). That's not to say that it's everyone, but I really think you're misconstruing what's going on if you think it's some weird fantasy play.
on one hand, i agree with how shiro fans and especially those of the tumblrina kind project on shiro and see him as a ~symbol of LGBT+ and disability~ that no one should ever be MEAN (read: not cater) to. and that's annoying as fuck because shiro may not be the deepest chara ever, but he ain't some weak baby woobie.
on the other hand, near every shiro fan and/or RPer i've seen ships sheith or at least tolerates it, so idefk about your "keith fans ship it more" paragraph. that's not what i've seen, definitely not.
i know very little about the canon but through osmosis from otherwise neutral sources, i know of two things that are true
1) as of the latest canon, keith's an adult, so it's not underage 2) shiro broke up with adam before the series started. he's known keith since keith was at least 14 or 16, so "raised" is a real wrong approach to it.
to be fair, 'raised' isn't a fandom word. Keith's mother thanks Shiro for 'raising her son'. Its a canon word choice. Whether is was a good word choice or not is another matter, but its the word Keith's mother used regarding Shiro's relationship with her son
