I can't speak for everyone, but the game I'm playing isn't slice of life at all. I've never had so much castmate/close cr drama and psychological/physical horror packed so tightly together in any other game I've been in. Haven North has made supplies easier to grab, and some of the recent events (before the zombie-type break out) have been plottier rather than horrifying, so that might contribute to a higher standard of living, but that doesn't change the game's genre.
The key is to seek that shit out. It's not actually that hard to find. I think some of the people on RPanons were talking about that. There are IC consequences for a lot of things that range from death to hallucinations to monster attacks. You just have to decide you want to play them out, and suddenly, you and your CR have horror on your hands. Don't worry about what other people are doing. I would bet a lot of the slice of life in game comes from lack of ideas and powerful characters, so if you come up with an idea that gets things rolling, there's a good chance a lot of people who were playing slice-of-life type things a minute ago are going to be excited for terrible things the next.
