You're misunderstanding, what I mean is we're always writing in text and the font people use to make text posts online is usually closer to the default font anyway.
Since this is text-based RP, everything we're writing is in text anyway. Even if someone is describing a character posting a video or talking through a voice recording, the players themselves are still typing and reading in text.
So I don't understand the logic at all behind changing the font when characters happen to be actually, ICly, typing instead of speaking out loud. It seems like people think that somehow courier looks more like computer text, but...we're already typing on computers. If anything, the default DW font looks closer to what most websites and phones use for their fonts, anyway. Courier looks closer to a typewriter. I guess I would maybe get it if characters were literally passing typewritten notes back and forth but since they're not, why change the font from a more typical, modern font to one used by typewriters? It's just weird to me.
IMO, a subject line stating "text" should be enough. If the other player messes up and has their character do an action, then either assume their character is sending video responses or PM to clarify. I don't see the point in changing your play-style just so people don't have to read a little more in a reading-based hobby.
because courier is a font that "translates" to all computers. if you try to go with a more modern looking font, you run the risk of the text being broken on someone else's screen.
i personally do it because sometimes [text] in the subject line doesn't cut it. sometimes we chat in the subject line and the [text] gets left behind, sometimes we go a few days between tagging so it's easy to forget, and sometimes people just don't pay the fuck attention. before i started using a different font, i'd had plenty of people mistake text posts for audio posts.
if you want to do it that way, then that's fine. I hate how courier looks, though, so I will never ever ever ever ever ever ever use it. if that means people are going to mistake my text post for audio posts then I'll just correct them or something.
It makes me irrationally angry that you can't comprehend something as fucking simple as this. THIS IS WRTTEN IN TEXT. Unless someone recorded themselves cosplaying their character and posted it as a response, their reply to a video thread would be written with text. So there's no point in distinguishing IC text with courier because you're still using text to write it.
What if I think courier is horribly ugly and harder to read than the default DW font? How the fuck does that mean I don't know what the IC/OOC divide is or I don't understand what text replies are???
uh, no? most people tend to go with whatever the op has written the main post in. if a character makes a video post, many people have their character reply in video format. if you want your character to reply in audio or text, you need to label that in your subject line, or somehow otherwise make it obvious that your character isn't giving a video reply.
we're all OBVIOUSLY writing in text. no fucking shit. but we're pretending our characters are using video, audio, and text functions. the fuck are you doing, bro?
Oh my god you are literally the dumbest person I have met today and I spent all day in a fucking Walmart.
No shit the players are writing in text.
Sometimes the characters talk in text, and sometimes they talk in voice.
The point of using courier is to have an immediate visual differentiation between when the characters are talking in text and when they are talking in voice or video.
I understand the point. Yes, i know that sometimes what characters are communicating with can change. Yes I know about the IC/OOC divide.
I just think the courier convention is stupid because (1) courier looks more like a typewriter's text than computer text so it doesn't convey the right thing anyway, (2) us, the players, are writing in text anyway, so why differentiate when the characters are writing in text and not when they're doing audio and video? shouldn't the characters writing in text be the default? (3)courier is an ugly font (and tt is even worse) (4) typing out that html is more of a pain, to me, than paying attention to whether a mun put "text" or "audio" or "mating dance" in the subject line.
Back in my day we put "Text" in the subject line and paid attention to what the other characters were using and kept it in mind because we had enough brain cells to remember what the other character was using without html tags (that could possibly break) and ugly fonts.
shouldn't the characters writing in text be the default?
Well, it's clear where you've gone wrong, anyway.
No, it's not the default. As in there is no reason to assume text over video or voice when both video and voice are generally more prevalent ICly. That makes text the exception. That makes it the one that's easier to differentiate with courier.
(1) courier looks more like a typewriter's text than computer text so it doesn't convey the right thing anyway,
Doesn't it? And who's the say the default font for their IC device isn't Courier? Why are you assuming it's Arial?
What you're hilariously saying is that it's your headcanon that the IC comm device doesn't use courier and you're mad when people imply it does.
