I enjoy mlp for what it is. A cute, mindless kids show that's good to put on when I want to have on noise while doing chores or tags. It's quality kids tv...but that isn't quite the rarity (pun not intended) people act like it is. You can pretty much throw a dart at Cartoon Network's original shows and get just as high quality.

The rare part is that it's about female characters. Not the rest.

that, and it's about female characters that aren't just their stereotypes. You've still got the sporty one/fashionable one/smart one/quirky one/girl-next-door(?) thing going on, but at least they did stuff like having Rarity be interested in her own business, and Twilight not being good at everything, that sort of thing. Plus they're pretty good about not over-simplifying their lessons, too.

at least, that's the impression I got when I watched part of the first season. don't know if it's changed since then.

it's sad when something that basic is treated like a big deal. i know television sucks but it's still not that deep because the characters are written like a kids show should be.

at least thanks for bronies nobody forces it as the most feminist show ever anymore.

nah, I don't think it's deep--but it's unfortunately rare to have a kids show with characters that are written that well, particularly one that focuses on girls. I can think of some that are aimed more at boys, or a mixed-gender cast (where girls are almost always the minority) but the sad thing is, I can't think of a girl's show that's like that beyond FiM.

sophia the first, strawberry shortcake, the one show with the fairies, doc mcstuffins... i babysit a little girl and there were/are actually a fair handful of decent shows that star girls or focus on girls

not that there can't be more, the more the better, but fim isn't some rare magical beast

maybe it was just when I was growing up, then? the only one of those shows that I've heard of is strawberry shortcake, and I know nothing about it beyond the name and the vague remembrance of having sheets with her on it as a kid.

they remade it in to a new series

No one's saying it's DEEP. They're saying it's progressive because it's not got flat stereotyped characters that happen to be all girls aimed at girls, and there's no demonizing any of their jobs. You can be girly, a tomboy, or anything in between, and it's okay.

actually, a lot of people do argue it's deep.

Well duh, I'm sure people say it somewhere on the internet. it's become one of those overused words like "epic" and "awesome" and "privilege."

I think the point was that nobody in this thread was arguing that FiM is deep.

It's not treated as a big deal, it is a big deal.

Over here, it's literally the only kid's show in TV with female main characters.

No other show here does it. None. At most it's some guys and one guy, where all guys are one type (like the smart guy, the sporty guy) and the girl is also like that, just that her type is "the girl".

The shows you list later? None of them are running here. So yeah. It just is a big deal, at least where I live. And tbh, even with the shows you list, that'd be very, very few.

It's sad that it is a big deal today. It shouldn't be. It still is. And that sucks.
