that wasn't what was being argued in this thread though

like, what you're replying to was in direct response to "i've never understood why ppl think it's SO MUCH BETTER than bbc sherlock"

sherlock had a really goddamn racist episode, elementary cast lucy liu as watson and isn't making the character a walking stereotype; sherlock has multiple "oh my gosh someone thinks we're a COUPLE!" scenes and that weird thing they did with irene adler, elementary actually managed to introduce a major trans* character and didn't make any jokes or make her a stereotype or a villain

like, i realize elementary isn't the best thing on tv, but it's definitely better than bbc sherlock, if only because bbc sherlock sets a really low bar

Not the best thing on TV? Uh, Elementary is only not total shit because it has Lucy Liu in it. It's just mostly shit. It's a bland-ass cookie-cutter crime drama starring a guy doing a bad Benedict Cumberbatch impression that has fuck-all to do with Sherlock Holmes aside from a couple of character names. At least Sherlock actually seems like it might have something in common with what Conan Doyle was writing about. Oh, and if we're talking about fucking up Irene Adler then Moffat never shoved her in a refrigerator simply for the sake of upping the male lead's wangst points. Turning a female character who wasn't even remotely after the main character's cock and managed to completely stomp him at his own game when she was created in like 18-freaking-90 into the hero's MURDERED GIRLFRIEND is the precise opposite of progressive gender roles, SJWs.

I'm really amused that this was the comment you anon-failed on, of all things.

well who was it? deets my good anon DEETS

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure it was deet-worthy, wasn't a known wanker or someone in the BBC Sherlock fandom or anything like that.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, one thing out of a lot! How terrible!

It's still more progressive than White Boys Being White--I mean, Sherlock.

I also don't think you know what SJW means since you're the one bemoaning this entire show based on one thing and that it ~*doesn't match up to Conan Doyle's Writing*~. Guess what? 90% of Sherlock adaptations don't! Gasp, shock, horror!

Ignoring the topic of this thread but the reason some Sherlock fans like the show so much is because it's probably the ONLY one that's been adapted well with regards to Conan Doyle's original text. Personally, that's why I like it. I read the original books and I love all the little in-jokes and hints the writers of Sherlock introduce into the series, specifically for people who have read the original books.

Elementary isn't a Sherlock series imo. It's a bunch of people trying for it, sure, but nothing about that show reminds me of Conan Doyle's original works or why I liked them. And in terms of 'progressive shows' there are far better out there. The writers of Elementary didn't cast LL as Watson to be 'progressive'. They cast her because they know sexual tension SELLS and by making Watson a woman, they can appeal to a larger heteronormative audience.

> sherlock
> the only good adaptation of acd canon

lmfao okay sweetcheeks, you've just invalidated your entire point

cutesy fandom injokes don't count for anything if you don't get the spirit of the books right
and sherlock tramples all over the spirit of the novels

go watch some granada holmes and get back to me
hell, go watch the rdj movies. even they did a better job than sherlock.

I haven't watched Elementary yet but I like how well BBC Sherlock was produced as an adaptation of the original stories in a modern setting. I disagreed about how Irene Adler was handled but other than that I enjoyed how the episodes were remade into something new, while still having some links to the original stories.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'd prefer the refrigerator than Mossats handling, tbh. Better storytelling overall.

Still bad, but way better.

Calm your wall of rage, sugartits, I'm not a huge Elementary stan. I find both shows decent fun, but acting like it hasn't gotten several elements better than Sherlock is a losing argument. Neither treatment of Irene Adler was great, but I personally would prefer "the character is dead we're not using her at all" to "LESBIAN DOMINATRIX WHO TAKES MALE CLIENTS AND IS IN TRUE LOVE WITH SHERLOCK." And I appreciate that Elementary didn't do an entire racist episode, that it doesn't pull ~ooh people think we're gay crap, and that it actually had a great portrayal of a trans* character. So, yes, it is in fact more progressive.

Pretty much.

have you read any of arthur conan doye's original work? cumbersnatch's sherlock is so far from the original stuff they might as well not have bothered. at least the elementary guy is playing sherlock holmes.
