There's a big difference between 'one thread for discussing my character's problems' and 'every thread is about my character'.

Yes, there is. But if people didn't all get sucked into these 'all about me' fests to begin with, there'd be enough give and take in ALL the threads to cover the ground that needs to be covered for character development, without having to artificially stage things.

I'm not saying wanting your character to get some attention and not be used AS the prop is bad - which is what you seem to be saying. I'm saying that the whole fucking cycle is stupid, and self-perpetuating. There's also a trickle down effect, where your character (general you), is the emotional support for a bunch of characters who don't give a shit about yours as anything but a prop, so eventually ends up needing to be fixed by someone else, and then they need to find someone to be their emotional support/given that thread that gets their issues out there, and on and on.

It's standard, it's obnoxious, and it's more obnoxious by virtue of being so fucking unnecessary.

i agree with this but i just want to laugh at how everything you describe mirrors ooc interpersonal interactions on this side of the internet, so it's really no wonder this is projected upon rp. people in general over here are really self-absorbed and think everyone else exists to comfort them and play therapist 24/7.

op, seek opportunities for character development elsewhere. your castmates are clearly useless. just make sure you don't use someone else's character as a prop.

Me, I just refuse to have my character be that emotional support unless I see the other players also do it. Since a few do, I happily have my characters support them and ignore the others.

Gets me some buttfurious PMs and 'crit', but whoopdedoo, not my fault. I'm not playing a therapist, but a canon jerk, he's not gonna soften up for random dudes and cockhop girls he doesn't care about and has no reason to respect. He saves that for people that actually seem competent and don't break down over breaking down one of their nails, ffs.

That's kind of where I am. I try to play only characters who are at least some kind of hard-ass and not inclined to be endlessly soppy when people give them no reason to give a fuck about their personal problems.

But are decent enough human beings that if someone IS a friend they care/can care. Yeah, yeah, it's some degree of OOC manipulation of my character, but it saves me nasty, annoying, soul-sucking "CR" which gets me NOTHING in return but a broken, exhausted, used up character and pisses me off.

And likewise, I get some buttmad reactions but I honestly don't care. If you can't treat my character are more than a prop for your character's drama, I don't want to play with you OR care about your opinion.
