i'd read the game info and they never told me what i messed up, if anything

but all was clear when i saw that a friend of the head mod put in an app for the same character the next day and was instantly accepted

Seconding this guess.

The standards are low so any decent app being rejected is usually a sign of the mods having strong, specific views on the canon or some other personal reason. The modship has only gotten more cliquey since the last recruitment.

i've had something similar happen: i got "you did not reserve this character, and someone has already applied for them"

bullshit, i reserved like half an hour after reserves had opened, got my app in like an hour after apps opened - but then i saw that my reserve had been deleted, and one of the mods' friends ended up getting that character :/ (and then dropped after a week, which i wouldn't have done wtf)

having seen so many people complaining about this sort of thing I'm thinking of making a point to screen cap my reserves just in case.

it was the first time i'd ever apped to a game (i was used to psls at the time) and it really put me off of apping in for several months which sucked - i've gotten over it now but idg why mods assume that their potential applicants would be so stupid as to not notice something like that, especially if they're excited or anxious over getting into whatever game

oh yeah, I had a reserve deleted only for someone a mod knew to promptly app that character, too! i've been screencapping my reserves ever since tbh.
