The Mirror is a notoriously bad tabloid.

But as far as I know, no report has never mentioned it anything to do with the script (and I love Nine but some of the scripts in his series set the bar pretty low). People want to put the blame on the script but when its unlikely that had anything to do with the decision and it's more about his attitude, which I don't blame him for at all. Eccleston has said he just doesn't enjoy the " (fan) culture" around Doctor Who and so it doesn't really make sense he'd participate in a 50th anniversary that is basically a fanfest regardless of script quality or lack there of. While I am glad they did, I am personally surprised they even approached him to get him back considered what he's said in the past.

another nine fan here. it's sad that eccleston left the show with less-than-fond memories, but reading that he didn't like the fan culture... well, i completely understand.
