Anons: are there any canons that are popular/tend to have big casts that you WOULD NOT say are "fad canons"?

I play from obscure canons a lot and am a lone canon warrior nine times out of ten, but whenever I finally end up liking something that gets a lot of players it inevitably ends up being labelled a fad canon full of flakes. Doesn't matter if it's a movie, TV series, or video game, and some of the canons I like still get called fads when they're ongoing series that are over a year old. I don't mind being a lone canon warrior, but it' be nice to have a cast sometimes without looking like a fad player.

Is there such a thing as a popular-but-not-fad canon, or is the fad label an inevitable part of playing from something popular?

Don't fucking worry about it and play the characters you find interesting and want to RP.

To me, "fad canon" wouldn't only be applicable for something that JUST came out, or just became popular. For example, back in the day I think you could say that Homestuck is a fad canon, but these days there's plenty of players who have stuck with characters from that canon for at least a year or so and are still truckin'. I don't think I'd call MCU a fad canon anymore, either, since it's been nearly a year since Avengers came out. It's popular, sure, but there's plenty of people that have played from those films for a while.

The thing is, there will always be flakes, even in small fandoms. It's just that the bigger fandoms have more players, so it's easier to see a "trend" in canons...which is probably where some of the fad canon stereotypes comes from. (The other, more valid [to me] reason is probably that there are people that really, really want to be in on the hottest new thing, play with friends, or be in a big cast. I think that's what people are usually worried about when it comes to "fad canons" but I think the term gets thrown around too much.)

There's plenty of popular but not fad canons out there. Harry Potter, Supernatural, Naruto, Fate/(yes it counts, F/Z ended like ten months ago and F/SN has been available translated for like five years), Touhou, Hakuouki (came out over a year ago), Ace Attorney, A:TLA+Korra, Persona, Tales of, just to name some.

But bottom line is just enjoy what you want to play and fuck everybody else's opinion about what you like. Just stick with it for a while and nobody will call you a fad apper.

korra's still mostly considered a fad canon and if it isn't right now it probably will be when season 2 starts

Nearly all of those canons suck ass.

the question isn't "is this good?" the question is "is it a fad?"

anything popular enough to reliably have many casts at games will be called a fad canon at some point so it's best not to worry about it.

imo a fad canon shouldn't be a fad for more than 3-4 months. beyond that calling it a fad is kind of excessive, even if it's still popular. in other words, if you're still playing from something like madoka i'd really hesitate to call you a fad apper. unfortunately there are some people who seem to think that if something was a fad canon once, it always will be. i see anons calling inception a fad canon still. that fad is long over.

"Fad canon" is a useless label. Realistically, fads don't actually last beyond a few months after the release of new material. A canon might maintain its popularity, but "popular" isn't the same thing as "fad", and most reasonable people are capable of understanding that.
