rape implies an lack of or inability to consent. coercion implies there was consent. the fine difference between the two is usually decided on a case by case basis. one person's coercion may be a full removal of consent to another, especially depending on the victim's state of mind and whether or not they believe there is a way out.

i'd guess it would be the difference between abusing someone emotionally (like telling them they're worthless and only you care about them etc etc) and telling them you'll hurt them if they don't give sex.

one's awful and fucking douchebag behavior that people should be helped or educated to avoid or escape, but it's still not rape. the other is rape. this scenario sounds like the latter.

Sex via coercion IS a form of rape. Coating a pile of shit in gold and diamonds doesn't make it any less shit. Victims are victims, no matter how they became victims. If there is a way to escape a situation but the victim doesn't do so (whether via terror or intimidation or whatever), it's STILL RAPE. Calling it otherwise is victim-blaming.

with the rape culture in our society, we don't have the ability to, as a culture, categorize these things without lessening some crimes when they shouldn't be, and move into victim blaming territory.
