All people expect with backtagging is that if they tag into a post late or are a bit slower that people will keep tagging them. They just don't want to see a thread dropped before it's been more than 48 hours after the initial post.
That being said, a lot of people who want backtagging can tag once every day or so. You don't have to keep tagging them if once a week is normal and they aren't on hiatus.

i've seen two or three people withdraw from the event but i didn't exactly see any whining

i haven't seen any whining either, but it does seem like people are being more intense about opting out than usual. i never noticed people being this vocal about not wanting to participate in an event before. i know there's been events that squicked me out far worse than this and i've been more excited for what I WAS going to do and not what i wasn't.
