What a lot of people really don't get is that what makes characters like Batman and Holmes as effective as they are is their knowledge and influence.
For instance, Holmes makes deductions based on clues he sees in a scene and things about a person. He's definitely smart, but he also has a great deal of knowledge about the world and people within it. He's not going to have the same level of knowledge when being removed from the world he's familiar with and placed into a strange world with people who are from widely different cultures than the ones he's familiar with. He's going to need time to learn how things work in the jamjar and likely will make mistakes if he bases deductions off things he knows from his own world.
The same applies to Batman, but in his case also add in a lot of influence and money. He has a ton of gadgets as well that help him out and the brains to come up with a good plan of action. But in most games he's not going to have all his gadgets or the money to get more. On top of that he's got a lot of influence in Gotham City and people who will tell him when things are happening. Without that, he loses a lot of his effectiveness.
The problem is, people expect that those characters will be just as effective as they are in canon. It's not just the players, other people in the game would call them OOC if they aren't as effective even though that would not only be realistic, but it would also be only fair to the players of villains. It's no wonder that the vast majority of players of those characters also drop pretty quickly. They just don't work outside their canon.
