most gen memes have some shippy options. if they have a m/m tag, it just means that's what they'd like to play for those scenarios. it doesn't translate into their only wanting to play with male characters even for general, non-shippy prompts.
I've seen some people in the gen memes putting "ota but [preference] for romance/shippy stuff" and it's those people that I, myself, find myself gravitating towards because they at least made it obvious they're open for generic interactions.
yeah, actually, it often does mean they only want to play with male characters for even non-shippy prompts. or that they have absolutely no interest in non-shippy prompts and just want to get them some m/m.
unless you've played with every one of the players about whom you're saying that, you are just projecting your own assumptions. i have never had it happen that someone who'd put up a shipping preference refused a gen prompt from one of my characters who wasn't of the shipped gender. your experience is no more universal than mine.
