How much hate would an abortion or giving the baby up for adoption plot get?
It seems to that so many accidental pregnancy plots tend to be played out the same way: the characters angst because they aren't ready for the baby, can't afford a baby, but ultimately decide to keep the baby, and by the next thread, said pregnancy has made them closer and now they're in love and getting married.
Is aborting a fetus/putting the baby up for adoption that taboo in RP?
I'd be okay with either, as long as they were handled tastefully and not played for angst. I was once in a game where a character had a miscarriage (after the other half of their lovey dovey OTP dropped) and then spent the next several months being suicidally depressed and in need of hurt/comfort logs. I have nothing but sympathy when something like that happens IRL, but fuck, don't bring it into a game just so you can have your character angst prettily. I hate pregnancy plots and I think they should be banned. If you want to play out pregnancy and child OCs, do it in you own goddamned musebox.
I actually played out a character getting pregnant and then aborting the fetus, although it was in a small, under-the-radar type of game. People would probably make a big fuss about it if it was in a larger/more popular place.
Whether or not it's okay I think depends on how it's played out. People who play up abortion as a source of DEAD BABY TRAUMA or who have "bad girl" characters have abortions to prove how "bad" they are -- that's literally never going to be good. But abortions happen, and I think they can be done well, depending on the context.
i really want to rp a character getting pregnant and aborting without consulting their partner. also post-partum depression. i can't speak for others though, regarding how taboo it might be, all i know is one of these days, one of these museboxes, i'm gonna do it.
I tried the post-partum depression plot once, and had to drop because the other person was taking it too far. However, I think I wouldn't mind doing it again with someone I trusted. And, I like te aborting without consulting, too.
as a retired mod; i wouldn't want to touch the abortion thing with a 100 foot pole. that's like taking a baseball bat to a potential hornet's net and hitting it...
just because i would be okay with it doesn't mean the majority of the players would. this is why i made it not worth it for a character to get knocked up in the first place.
adoption sure, abortion would be really really dependent on whether or not I could trust the players involved to handle it well because it can be played out so awfully easily.
I got to do a plot like this in a small game once! I played the father and he DID NOT want a baby. ICly he's immature and would be the sort to freak all the hell out and think mostly about himself, so that's how I played it. I got some minor in-game backlash from people who were blurring some serious IC/OOC lines, so i would never attempt this in a big game, but it was still fun.
i don't get pregnancy plots in most games outside of places like holly heights or other slice of life places where stuff revolves around shoes shopping.
they restrict you from most plots, there's a damn good chance the otp will drop, the kid just drools, and half the time that shit is just shoved down other player's throat and it's a half assed excuse for attention whoring.
i would much rather have a game infested with kittens and puppies; tbh.
Abortion is something one of my characters would consider if she ever got pregnant in game, simply because of circumstance, etc. Yet I wouldn't do it (nor would I ever do pregnancy plots past "scares") because in RP that's just like a political hive of DNW and it'd be really hard to do right, for many reasons.
Maybe in a private rp or something, but it's too easy to have it LOOK like it's for the angst, etc.
I have a character who shouldn't be a parent and probably would end up with the conclusion of "we can't possibly do this, let's make an appointment and get it taken care of" and I can't see her partner disagreeing too much.
I'd be willing to play the whole thing out beginning to end, and I actually think it can be an interesting test of the characters and their relationship, but I'd hate to think of the OOC backlash I'd receive for it.
From me? None. Abortion is a fact of life and unless you're also for, say, forced kidney donations, you have no moral grounds on which to be offended about it.
That said, I don't trust the majority of dw-players to not turn it into a dramatic soap-opera or OOC political statement, so I'd still roll my eyes at it. Same with adoption.
tw for abortion/adoption

Same with adoption.
