it's not that i dislike networks on principle, but almost all them work the exact same way regardless of the setting. i think the most unique out there right now is tower of animus's one, because you can only use it in a few locations and it's unreliable. And well henlein's had the radio thing but the game is apparently already dead. Why can't something like a fantasy setting have like... small dragons carry messages back and forth, and a more modern down to earth one have something like an IC facebook.
I'd also like to see networks abolished in games that have smaller areas. they make sense in big open worlds but why would something that takes place in a small town or a house of horrors even require one?

i dunno about you but i don't tend to send short, pointless messages as much over snail mail. sure some characters might, just to be a dick, but overall that's not going to be as casual communication style as facebook.

or is it all just text messaging and email nowadays

the main difference is that my character can squeal over the passenger dragons and maybe start to breed them the way that some people breed pigeons and oh gosh it would be so cute
i think characters should have to make their own network with whatever technology is available to them. unless there's a very good reason why the setting would provide PCs with communication devices and a private network, it just doesn't make much sense for those things to exist.
but if a game is set in a modern or scifi world, it would be neat to see characters exchange phone contact info after they meet irl, or coincidentally run into each other on an online forum if they happen to share common interests. it would add so much realism to the game.

I liked damned_insitute's one, which was a bulletin board where players had to handwrite things, knowing the nurses and orderlies could snoop on it and also censor. Made for more interesting "network" threads.
i miss games where the 'networks' were actually just characters' livejournals and they posted diary entries, commentary on pop culture, etc. just like actual bloggers.
I actually love Save the Earth's network. Your character can pretty much connect to the network via anything they can write on. That has led to some rather interesting posts and some of them get pretty creative.
This is why I like journal-based games. Since networks/action posts aren't separated, most people put an action option alongside network posts, so you can completely ignore the network stuff and still tag everything.
You can do that in a comm-based game, too. It's not really necessary to split most games into network/log comms - in fact, smaller games probably benefit from not being split. It's just one of the many things that's become "standard" in dwrp for no good reason.
in how many different games? because its fine in the one I'm in and fine in the one I was in before that and I'm guessing you're only talking about 1-2 games too.
