for me, even if the art is simplistic, it serves the basic purpose we're using icons for. it gives a context for how the character is delivering his response. it might look silly, but it only stands out because it's a stick figure instead of "animu crack," and again, serves the purpose of context cues for how to take the interaction.
regarding only applying it ic, i think it's important to point out that how we perceive the character tends to inform how we should have our characters respond, particularly in panfandom rp where not everyone is intimately familiar with the characters and won't automatically know "okay, but ic i shouldn't take him seriously."
also, i'll take simplistic art expressions over generic model linefacing, and am one of those pesky people who prefer people use canon art whenever it's available.
like i said, your mileage may vary. aesthetics are a very subjective thing, and what you're saying is a valid opinion. i just happen to not feel the same way.
fair enough. i agree our opinions can differ while both being valid.
i thought about it for awhile and i think what really bothers me is the lack of nuance in the icons which makes it difficult to inform the mood of the tags past the very, very basic and broad "happy" "sad" "confused" and so on. on that point i agree with you, model linefacing would be just as bad--but LA PBs also include actors from movies, for example, who make a very large range of expressions.
i don't really care that the art is ugly or that the style of the icons is so basic (since, again, we have homestucks who use canon icons), it's more that the presentation of the icons make the character's emotional range extremely shallow and difficult to take seriously or thread with.
but yeah, those are just my thoughts. it doesn't affect me as long as i choose not to thread with elan, i just think it would be better for the player if they intend to create cr with a larger variety of people.
