honestly i'd love to see legitimate consequences from this, where people tangle themselves in rigging, get tar all over themselves, can't figure out how to load cannons, accidentally set the powder magazine alight due to sparks, realize that sleeping space is at a premium and YOU FUCKERS CAN'T JUST HANDWAVE A ONE PIECE-STYLE KITCHEN INTO YOUR TINY ASS SHIP.
oh wait no, that won't happen, that would be realistic.
not quite what I meant! the game lists very little about the qualities of the boats mentioned, presumably because the mods didn't do their research. brig-sloops only came into use a solid two centuries after caravels went out of style, for example.
but that, too. naval shenanigans would be way more engaging if the realities of boats were factored in.
lol you're working with mods who are one piece fans, and the two main ships in that are...a caravel and a brig sloop. and with the size of the crews they're allowing, i REALLY don't think they're trying to be accurate or anything.
not everyone is going to want to do research to play a fake character on the internet.
THAT BEING SAID, definitley hoping some of these newbies sink their ships in the first week. if only for the laughs.
the crew size thing is understandable, since ships in the age of sail took hundreds of crew and were boring as fuck to sail. but they basically just seem to be using exciting words to apply to undescribed blobs of wood that will serve as a primary setting for their players... it's just lazy.
how/why is it lazy though? they just went through and picked out some ships based on sizes to give the players options to chose from. does it matter they're not from the same period, ESPECIALLY considering there *is no time period* in this game? since it's a different world????
wow, of all the things to get your panties in a twist about, you pick this?
1) way to be pedantic.
2) this games takes place in a magical pirate world, not earth. your nitpick about the eras which ships were in use is invalid.
3) one of the mods probably knows more about this kind of stuff than you could find in your wiki-hopping. they just understand that most people aren't going to get hung up on such details and would rather be able to play shenanigans on boats. if people want to be realistic, no one's stopping them from playing it out, they are just not forcing people to.
It's a game where people who can use magic are brought in by Davy Jones and search for a magic jewel in a world that is 90% ocean, and you're worried about realistic ships.
Actually one of them did. (http://whitecapbay.dreamwidth.org/783.html)
Calm your tits, anon, it's just RP. They're fully aware their ships aren't logical / don't go with the time period / aren't all FROM the same time period. But hey! It's doesn't take place in our world! So who gives a fuck!
...Dude. One of the mods is making a masterpost on pirating and ships. I doubt they didn't do their research. It's just that no one cares as much as you do about ships, and expecting every single person to put hours of research into this so they can play a game and have fun and whatnot. when you can teleport between ships because MAGIC once a week, I think the "research" is the least important thing.
If you want something 100% accurate, you don't want a game. So, go write a book, butthurt baby.
I'm in the game, an AoS geek, and I think you're putting way too much concern into this aspect.
Now, I really, really want to see people struggle with the aspect of steering these vessels and all of that (and I plan on my character having a hard time with it, especially since they aren't given to manual labor at all) but I don't think "They're from different eras!" is something to worry too much about.
not in the game, but are other characters offering themselves up for leadership positions? are they tossing out ideas for things to do and giving clear direction? if not, then yeah, people are going to follow the shounen idiots, just because they're the only ones willing to play leader
does it bother anyone else...
(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)it's a pirate game motherfuckers. do your research.
