agreed, it's usually a personal thing ime. i have noticed most trans people prefer you stick with their true (preferred, post-coming out) pronouns when discussing any point of their lives, but some either don't care or consider pre-coming out them as almost different people.
tl;dr ask if you can, but when in doubt, use the real/post-out pronoun or gender neutral "they" until you can ask otherwise or are told not to
