like the anon above said, false equivalency. the term "fag" for cigarettes in british english isn't derived from "fag" the slur, it's derived from "fag" as in the word for twigs.
"bara" meanwhile is flat-out taking a word that has a history of being used as a slur against gay men and is still used as a slur against gay men, solely because people saw it in relation to gay porn involving manly men.
the two are not comparable. one is taken from a harmless word that just so happens to also be used as a slur, the other is outright taken from a slur. just don't use "bara" to refer to people because it's a slur when used that way.
the barazoku stuff cropped up in the late 60s/early 70s, but the word was in use as a slur before that. it was more of an attempt to reclaim the word that worked for a while. then the word fell out of usage for a while after the 80s before eventually resurfacing as a slur again.
I was corrected - it started as code first used by gay men and ended up becoming a slur when used by non-gays to insult. the problem seems to be that the term spread while it was still code, but within japan it changed to having bad connotations. the rest of the world just hasn't caught on to the fact that this has happened and are still using it.
not quite the same thing as illiteracy, but most of the percy jackson cast is dyslexic and I've seen it referred to by some of them once or twice where text conversations were involved.
What I can't stomach about them isn't their total lack of self-awareness but their disgusting sense of entitlement.
It doesn't come up as much b/c they've learned that OOC communication only works against them but back when they were still sperging on bakerstreet they made comments like how dare anyone ignore them and so on. I really think they believe they're owed tags and that's the source of their brute persistence. They don't care if literally everyone else wants them gone because all that matters is what they want. Then there's stuff like when they made fun of illiterate people or that time they posted rl crime scene photos of actual murdered children to a bakerstreet meme.
Every time I see someone defend this piece of trash I want to slap them.
I hadn't realized it was a slur prior to the barazoku era. The more you know.
Either way, yeah, it's very much used pejoratively in most Japanese vernacular so better just to use "gei comi" when talking about that subset of gay fiction, considering it is a wasei-ego meant specifically for Tagame and his peers/those that follow in their footsteps and not an umbrella term for gay manga in general (thank god, that'd be confusing).
And it was never ever meant to describe a certain body or character type either. That is very uniquely a modern fandom thing, particularly on tumblr.
i've been accused of having my character smut with a lot of people. in a sex game. where the point is to have your characters smut with a lot of people
I've a fantastic friend, impeccable writer, great person who I once played in a game with and I loved it when we got to do things together. Except when we would take the time to make plans, hammer out details, I would write up whatever beginning, and the player would outright just never reply or contribute or anything. Like a constant case of being immediately replaced by whatever shiny thing had crossed their path. I eventually dropped the game because it wasn't worth it enough to me to play a character so close to theirs if we were never actually going to interact.
Even knowing this, we recently started talking again and made new plans (with different characters) and the same thing is happening all over again. Slightly annoyed at the player, but more annoyed with myself because I knew this was going to happen and still had some kind of vain hope that it wouldn't. Makes me want to really up my standards about who I interact with extensively.
I'm tired of games being "medium-paced" which actually means, the majority of people are freakishly slow taggers, unless a plot goes up. Then everyone tags at light speed for two days before going back to nothing. And of course, the plots go up during my busiest times.
Also not a fan of having to scrounge to make AC becuase out of the six different threads I've tagged into this month, only one person bothered to tag back.
And really getting annoyed by people saying they wished people would be more willing to play with them, when these are the same people who tag back once a week. Yes, you have a well thought out character, but if I can't finish a thread with you in a reasonable amount of time, then I will stop playing with you. No matter how awesome your character is or how canonically close they are to mine.
Totally got a tag yesterday from a thread that I tagged into a month ago. I'd given it up for lost. And I love the people who tag once a week with the weakest, one line tags ever that don't further the conversation.
I've quickly learned that I work best in games without cast mates. They tend to be slow taggers, or never talk to my characters. It's always up to my character. For a long time I thought it was me. Perhaps I had such a bad handle on my character? But I finally asked, and these same people said they adored my character. Blah.
