yeah, but that doesn't mean all stories have them get together? some of them get together with different people all together. or they don't even get together with anyone at all and stay single which is also cool.
if you don't like a trope, then just say you don't like it. why reach so far just justify your dislike be claiming it's offensive?
right? wouldn't it make more sense if they had suppressed pain receptors? some people in real life have that (and it's a bad condition to have because you can't sense when you're being injured.) god she sucks at writing her own stupid au.
this stuff may be in the game but saying it's "dark shit" is showing less how SERIOUS pokemon is and more how stunted you are that you can't see the forest for the trees. that shit's in there as background noise, or to give kids a reason to hate the villains, who are ridiculously bumbling morons half the time even if they have these grand schemes. Pokemon is not a "dark" canon and making it into one is Missing The Point. same as apping fucking Kirby to Ryslig.
Yeah tbh I've never seen it applied as just something where they met and fell in love because they happened to like each other because of who they were due to environment and genetics.
It's always some spiritual connection that's totally independent of who the characters are or supposed to be powerful even before they build a relationship.
I'm sure there's an odd story here and there that maybe uses it better, but people already pointed out a few examples of the trope in the thread like Shayer/Carter to show how badly it's often done.
Don't move the goalposts. The subject of the thread seems to be the enjoyment of the actual romance between soulmates. Canons where characters ignore it and love someone else or love no one obviously are eschewing it as a good endgoal.
And I didn't say it was offensive. I'm a totally da. I think the anon claiming it's offensive or rapey is stupid even if I agree it's a dumb trope.
I just think it's shitty writing, ignores what makes relationships actually good, weird, and kind of soulless in that it makes love something automatic and mechanical instead of something you build and grow.
which, as i said to the above anon, is fair to dislike what you dislike. everyone has that.
but what i didn't like about your argument is the bit with the weird mystical being thing that forces reincarnations to love each other. i haven't moved any goalposts because, as i said, a lot of the people have said already that's not the appeal of that kind of story.
for example, i think good reincarnation story can develop character relationships in an interesting and fun ways. i also, admittedly, like the sappy aspect of it. especially if there's conflict in which the characters think they're tied to a predetermined destiny but decide that's stupid and do what they want.
If it doesn't force them to love each other, what even makes them reincarnated soulmates then? That is why you confuse me.
Although if you like shit where people go "fuck it, i do what I want"
Well in that case I agree. Fuck fate. Free love, baby. That wouldn't bug me as a story because they're telling fate to stick it.
I just think the versions where it's the end game are lame as hell. Fakey fakey magic shortcut gummy bear candy harlequin bullshit. it's like wish fullfillment author avatars. I guess someone can enjoy it but it's not remotely authentic to any lived human experience.
And before anyone whines about fantasy or whatever not being a normal lived human experience, usually good writers have the characters reactions to the weirdness still have some kind of emotional truth or realism.
please point to me where i said anything about soulmates in my replies to you. personally, i've been talking about reincarnation in storytelling mostly. not the whole soulmate deal.
that said, if we're talking about reincarnated soulmates, hell stories that do say stick it to fate still call them soulmates. but in those stories like those, they (the characters) again think that's dumb a notion.
it wouldn't chafe my ass so much if they didn't immediately start yammering on about how all they want to play is shippy things after they're done complaining about shipping memes
Okay then we don't disagree at all. I have no problems with stories about reincarnation in general. There's a lot of arguments in this thread about reincarnated soulmate romance stories specifically and that's what my argument is against. I also think stories where they tell fate to suck it are a non-lame usage of the trope.
So we don't actually disagree with each other.
imo there's a lot of people thinking anons are other anons. I am not the main anon arguing the trope is rapey or w/e. I was a new one that popped in with slightly different arguments.
'announced he's been banned' sounds wanky as fuck to me
besides, this is an ecats game. either you're close enough to the problem to know all the details already, or it's none of your business and you'll never find out
people eventually started generalizing it as reincarnation in general though. sorry that you can't wrap your head around a topic evolving as it goes on, i guess?
the thread is huge by this point, yeah. in hindsight, i should have realized that and not made my response so generalizing as to imply you're that anon so sorry about that.
