Yeah tbh I've never seen it applied as just something where they met and fell in love because they happened to like each other because of who they were due to environment and genetics.
It's always some spiritual connection that's totally independent of who the characters are or supposed to be powerful even before they build a relationship.
I'm sure there's an odd story here and there that maybe uses it better, but people already pointed out a few examples of the trope in the thread like Shayer/Carter to show how badly it's often done.

Don't move the goalposts. The subject of the thread seems to be the enjoyment of the actual romance between soulmates. Canons where characters ignore it and love someone else or love no one obviously are eschewing it as a good endgoal.

please point to me where i said anything about soulmates in my replies to you. personally, i've been talking about reincarnation in storytelling mostly. not the whole soulmate deal.

Okay then we don't disagree at all. I have no problems with stories about reincarnation in general. There's a lot of arguments in this thread about reincarnated soulmate romance stories specifically and that's what my argument is against. I also think stories where they tell fate to suck it are a non-lame usage of the trope.
