Soulmates aren't something I have a strong opinion on either way, and it's pretty clear from reading this thread that I have a very different opinion on them from other pro-soulmate anons (and I don't think they're wrong, just that I clearly like different things in my fiction). That said--
1. "Reincarnate as a villain"?? No villain pops out fully formed, so it must have been the person's life experiences that made them villainous in this life, especially given that they apparently weren't an asshole in previous ones. What you describe seems like a prime opportunity for a soulmate-induced villainous redemption arc.
2. "It's just nonsensical to think that this is going to work without a huge clash and tragedy." I know right? Isn't it great. :DDD
Personally, I actually find soulmates to be kind of boring wish-fulfillment UNLESS there's this kind of conflict caused by it. (Nothing against people who like the sweet aspects of soulmates; just not my thing.)
