Well, you don't really want to go too far in either direction, imo. As an example,
Well, duh. Obviously. [She rolls her eyes. She's an important scientist and she has to answer stupid questions like this. What's the point of this conversation again?]
That might be IC, but there are better ways of phrasing it, because it sounds more like you as an author being judgey than the character. And then there's,
Well, duh. Obviously. [She rolls her eyes, because it's clear that everyone knows this and she's not just an idiot. Except she is, lol!]
That one gets obnoxious because the author feels they need to narrate how ~silly and dumb~ their character is, instead of showing it.
So the trick is to find a balance, right? I just personally err on the side of subtly implying that my character is being a prat, rather than make all meta 100% IC thoughts and actions and nothing else.
