the school doesn't publish student papers, sadly, so i've no link to give you. i may be able to find the slides i did, but i'd want to edit them to remove my name/etc.
anon, i know you're salty, but you don't even need to do the extent of research i've done to know there's more than that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_characters_in_video_games
Possibly because we're discussing Genji's trauma in the context of his possible romance with Mercy, which at least in commin fandom portrayal uses particular tropes that are very gendered. Like I dare you to find me one gender reversed instance of the same narrative of romance as caring and validation of humanity and worth. Genji's a sweetheart and his story is interesting, but in the context of the ship it plays into annoying gendered clichés.
tbh when rp starts to feel more like an obligation and you start doing other hobbies instead, that sounds like the definition of rp being "not fun" anymore
I'm one of the anons above you and you've got a point. One thing I do think is true about Gency is that it's incredibly cliche, but otoh I'm not really expecting anything new or innovating from Blizzard with this, especially since they have a cast of over twenty characters to write for.
except no it doesn't since his shit has nothing to do with gender, except for tumblrinas who drink green tea out of mugs with the words "male tears" on them.
the "it's been done to death" criticism of gency is perfectly valid, but honestly, no one should have expected better from Blizzard. for every time they break from tired tropes, they double down on them elsewhere several times over. honestly we should be kind of grateful either character is getting developed at all, even if it's with a milquetoast ship like this.
i want to cattily reply "and the person you're playing with can tell" but i'll be optimistic for once and assume actually you manage to not be a dick about it, so--
genuine question: what do you do to try to make sure that, even if you dislike a character OOC, you give your own character an honest chance to have a good impression of them?
Oh yeah I hardly expected any different, which is why I'm not on some barricade yelling for the execution of poor Michael Chu for daring to support the pairing he actually likes. I'm just pointing out why Gency may be personally unsatisfying for some people despite its canon sweetness. Because someone asked.
