yeah, i got the impression the protagonists were supposed to be unsympathetic too. my problem is the author's done such a good job of creating a pair of deeply disturbed monomaniacs i don't feel all that bothered about what happens to either of them, and if i'm not interested in the characters i know i won't get on with a story. i had the same problem with a novel a few years back - the author had written such a convincing bunch of egocentric, self-deluding, narrow-minded asshole characters that i didn't want to spend much time around them because seriously you are all annoying as fuck, go away. which is a shame, because i find the premise of stalking killing absolutely fascinating. it's not so fascinating as to make me want to spend 13 chapters plus around a pair of characters i think are both irritating bastards, though.
