hahahahaha yeah i realised this is exactly what it is. drinking cold drinks out of mugs is common. this is why the friend's mom got *so* mad ("she would hit it out of your hand!"), the mom is terrified of seeming poorer than they are. and this is why it looks dumb to everyone else because it is.
