da chiming in to say that my grandma is the same way, she uses he a lot in english regardless of who she's referring to and it's not a matter of intentional misgendering, it's just that english doesn't come equipped with the same easy interchangeable null gender address.
if the translators are just given lines to translate out of context i can understand why it might just end up being denoted as 'he'. they is probably the easiest find and replace compromise, but languages are funny like that.
