yeah, it's similar in japanese (in that many forms of i/you are gender neutral and it's unusual to refer to people by any sort of specific pronoun because who you're talking about is understood from context) and as a fan translator it can definitely cause issues at times with characters whose actual gender is never stated or is unknown in canon.

i'm not at all surprised to hear of those sorts of issues occurring in an asian canon just because of how the language structure differs from english.
