I can see it as "Although I'm not a fan of her work" and "Even in a situation where I am not a fan of her work", so yes, it's not the best wording choice because of how easily it could be misunderstood. I do think in general, the line just felt unnecessary if only because a what-if approach just gives it a negative, insincere feeling.
