if you do not understand what made a thing popular in the first place, what drew people to it, ignore or even deface the existing lore and culture around it, you are bound to fail.
disney/marvel did this with almost all of their properties and still largely succeeded though? the only marvel property i can think of offhand that's pretty close to what made it popular is deadpool, the rest aren't quite whole-cloth inventions, but they're pretty pale shadows. similarly, christian bale's batman/joker were very little like the comics batman/joker, and people still hold that joker up in particular as the gold standard.
