ayrt and i'm also a lifelong new englander but i've only lived in urban zones, where its about level with "this fuckin guy." if i had to smoke weed and make up theories i'd guess it probably has to do with which immigrant backgrounds are most prevalent in a given area, but idk. i definitely associate it with blue collar people/neighborhoods
