before i started coloring my own icons i thought that almost every colored icon was the shit, unless the colors were horribly off or something.

now when i look at a lot of colored icons all i can think is "ew, why didn't you get rid of all that screentone and noise?"

making icons has made me kind of snobby about icons. also those white blobs are fucking ugly.

how do you remove the screentone? i don't usually make my own icons, but it'd be good to know just in case i decide to do it in the future.

Actually, skin screentone and the like can work wonderfully if you know the right ways to blend them in. Hair screentone is what drives me up the wall and I've taken to painting one layer of black over it before adding in colour.

okay, when i say screentone i mean visible screentone. screentone that's not particularly obvious is fine. it's typically less obvious when you paint a darker color over it, but when you're using light colors it tends to pop out more.

as for how to get rid of it... there's no easy way. personally, i mess with the levels function to get rid of the worst of it, then erase. this is because i use a fucking touchpad, but it's pretty quick if dirty. erasing around the lines is the worst, and i generally use a light brush at like 70% opacity to lightly erase without leaving the edges all jaggy. best way would be to erase the screentone around the lines (this is REALLY annoying without a pressure-sensitive tablet), then just select the rest of it and delete. once it's gone you have a cleaner slate to work with.

less about the icons, but I can't help but wonder how people think over-complicated sparkledog character designs like this look good. How do you look at that and think "Yeah, this is a really good design."
