As long as they stick to memes, I think it's fine to be playing them now, especially because there's a lot of already established canon to go off of (even if the show changed some things the characters are essentially the same).
Apping/reserving after one episode would still be pretty dumb though and I hope no one's doing that.
i really enjoyed the pilot and hope to play someone from this
but goddamn the amount of elitism in this fandom from people who take grave offense to the fact that anything hannibal is being made without anthony hopkins (never mind the two movies without him that already exist) is annoying and i hope it doesn't extend to the rp side of fandom
i don't give a shit about anthony hopkins. i love him as hannibal, but i am a book fan first.
what i am pissed about is that the will/hannibal ship already has a name. even more than the normal hair tearing that comes with is the fact that hannibal has a *canon* fucked up romantic relationship with an fbi agent, but the only thing i am ever going to see rped is this bullshit.
sorry some people have different ships, but I've been shipping will/hannibal long before the show and so have lots of people (there is fic for it from the books)
I don't ship hannibal/clarice, I do wish people would give it attention even with the new series because I know a lot of people do ship it, but I wish the fandom would stop acting like any other ship is destroying something sacred
i saw at the start credits that it was based off a book. i've never read the books or seen the other movies (i mean i've heard of them, i don't live under a rock), but i really really enjoyed this first episode. what i'm worried about right now is that if i go read the book, i'll be spoiled for how the show plays out if the adaptation's faithful.
On the one hand, I get this, on the other... wow. Sorry, I'm already seeing too many people saying stupid things in relation to theorizing around this series that are specifically answered in the book and movies. So don't be surprised if novel fans lose patience real fast.
while i echo the sentiments of the other anons on this thread, let me add a comment of a different flavor. here's a basic rundown of what to expect without getting yourself spoiled, if this will help: the tv show is set roughly before the events in red dragon and years after hannibal rising. canon chronology is hannibal rising > red dragon > silence of the lambs > hannibal. publishing-wise, red dragon was the first novel to come out, followed by silence, hannibal, and rising. i strongly suggest reading the books in publishing order, and watching the movies in order of release, including manhunter (the one with brian cox).
if you really want to get to the material outside of the tv show, i'd suggest just watching silence of the lambs and red dragon (2002), and then leave it at that until the season is over; the books are very different in a particular manner that the movies didn't get to show enough of but imo the tv show seems to get.
tl;dr if you want to avoid book spoilers for one reason or another, but you want to add color to how you see the tv show, just watch those two movies. those movies left out enough that reading the books will still be a surprise for you, but included enough to give you a better look at what to expect from the show.
also for the love of god don't touch hannibal rising.
I'm actually glad the fandom is increasing, I am. I love the series and hope people get into it and I can have fun and thoughtful discussions with them about the canon (except about Hannibal Rising).
The thing I, and I get the feeling maybe other people here, have issue with is the amount of character assassination that is going to occur because fandom is fandom and the people who like to reduce fascinating characters like Will and Lector down to one dimensional buttsex buddies always seem to be the loudest of the new members when a fandom first gets big. I know this will die down, but I can't blame people for having a kneejerk DO NOT WANT reaction.
PFFT hipster my ass. it was never a secret cool kids' club either. it just wasn't considered pretty enough.
the movie and book was always good enough and is still good enough. i don't need a new show with younger pretty actors to keep me interested. too bad you dumbasses didn't show as much interest before.
and you may or may not be of the goldfish-shiny-syndrome variety but there are plenty who are and i can hate them and their superficial interest all i fucking want. so fuck you and the butthurt high horse you rode in on.
I saw the trailer for this and thought someone was taking the piss with it, but now hearing what everyone's saying here, yes I am sort of anxious about what fandom, in particular tumblr, are going to do with it. It isn't elitist to be concerned about what people are going to bring into your fandom. It was mere months ago that people were shipping Bilbo Baggins with Smaug, and I've actually been pleasantly surprised with how positive the impact of the movie has been in regard to LotR fandom. It was going stale before, with people who didn't think they needed to know their own canon, now everyone is competing over how well they know the Silmarillion.
I have a special place in my heart for Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter. When I finished Red Dragon and read Silence, I started shipping Clarice/Lecter too, and while it's nice to have people interested in a ship, either of them really, that it was pulling teeth to find good fiction of years ago, there is a fear of people watering down the elements into tab a into slot b and how pretty the actor playing Graham is etc. Red Dragon made me fall in love with Edward Norton, for the record. See, but I also know that I've been telling people to read the Hannibal novels for fucking ever, and maybe this will give people the kick up the ass they need.
I'm not holding my breath for the result to be all good, but if just a handful of people read the novels, which are coherent, well researched and amazing books, then I'll put up with a little bit of trash. It still isn't going to keep anyone from being nervous, considering the example tumblr sets, although it is sad to think that it will be cheapening Will/Hannibal in some way, which up until now was a rarely shared dirty little pleasure. It could go the Sherlock/Watson way, though, and have older fans of the pairing laying their heads on railway tracks in despair...
You might be me, anon. This is exactly how I feel about this fandom already-I like the idea of more life and people actually taking interest in Will (he's always been my favorite) but I'm already seeing Hannibal/Will omega fic discussion and forced marriage (complete with "I dont care how it happens/if it makes sense, just make it happen!") and people treating Will like he's a five-year-old moe blob my baby-Will omggggggg shaking and crying!!!! And this is only after two episodes. Let's just say my faith in this fandom is already limited.
Urgh see that is exactly what I didn't want and knew would inevitably happen. Will is my favorite because he is a goddamn fierce man with a strong honorable streak, and affection for his family, and a powerful self-harming imagination, and Hannibal wouldn't think a damn thing of him if he acted the way that the typical moeblob self insert does in slash fics. He'd be dead. He's killed people for less.
/destroys everything
I could dissolve into spoilers just to be spiteful, I suppose. That might make me feel better.
All you fuckers who think interactions between BBC!Sherlock and Graham is such an ~original~ and ~novel~ idea? It's not. It's predictable. And boring. And everyone and their fucking aunt has already had exactly the same ~original~ and ~novel~ thought as you.
