I saw the trailer for this and thought someone was taking the piss with it, but now hearing what everyone's saying here, yes I am sort of anxious about what fandom, in particular tumblr, are going to do with it. It isn't elitist to be concerned about what people are going to bring into your fandom. It was mere months ago that people were shipping Bilbo Baggins with Smaug, and I've actually been pleasantly surprised with how positive the impact of the movie has been in regard to LotR fandom. It was going stale before, with people who didn't think they needed to know their own canon, now everyone is competing over how well they know the Silmarillion.

I have a special place in my heart for Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter. When I finished Red Dragon and read Silence, I started shipping Clarice/Lecter too, and while it's nice to have people interested in a ship, either of them really, that it was pulling teeth to find good fiction of years ago, there is a fear of people watering down the elements into tab a into slot b and how pretty the actor playing Graham is etc. Red Dragon made me fall in love with Edward Norton, for the record. See, but I also know that I've been telling people to read the Hannibal novels for fucking ever, and maybe this will give people the kick up the ass they need.

I'm not holding my breath for the result to be all good, but if just a handful of people read the novels, which are coherent, well researched and amazing books, then I'll put up with a little bit of trash. It still isn't going to keep anyone from being nervous, considering the example tumblr sets, although it is sad to think that it will be cheapening Will/Hannibal in some way, which up until now was a rarely shared dirty little pleasure. It could go the Sherlock/Watson way, though, and have older fans of the pairing laying their heads on railway tracks in despair...

You might be me, anon. This is exactly how I feel about this fandom already-I like the idea of more life and people actually taking interest in Will (he's always been my favorite) but I'm already seeing Hannibal/Will omega fic discussion and forced marriage (complete with "I dont care how it happens/if it makes sense, just make it happen!") and people treating Will like he's a five-year-old moe blob my baby-Will omggggggg shaking and crying!!!! And this is only after two episodes. Let's just say my faith in this fandom is already limited.

Urgh see that is exactly what I didn't want and knew would inevitably happen. Will is my favorite because he is a goddamn fierce man with a strong honorable streak, and affection for his family, and a powerful self-harming imagination, and Hannibal wouldn't think a damn thing of him if he acted the way that the typical moeblob self insert does in slash fics. He'd be dead. He's killed people for less.

/destroys everything

I could dissolve into spoilers just to be spiteful, I suppose. That might make me feel better.

Oh, that's very cathartic, I highly recommend it. I normally feel more guilty about these sorts of things but I'm seeing people ask such stupid questions about hypotheticals that even from the first two episodes of the show so clearly ARE NOT GOING TO HAPPEN that I feel no guilt whatsoever in being like "No, this happens..."

I'm sure there are some good fans to emerge from this new wave of interest and I'm definitely keeping my eyes open but they're hard to find amongst all the bullshit.

And if I hear one more person complain about how "these are the reasons new fans are soooooo scared to get involved in this fandom!" I'll throw a dictionary at them because if you're not being a disrespectful asshole and you're a actually interested in these characters then there should be no reason to be "scared." ugh.
