apparently eccleston actually talked to moffat about coming back for the anniversary, which would have been fantastic and really unexpected since he said he would never ever come back to doctor who again
but then he saw what moffat had in mind for the script
if nine is your favorite you sure don't know much about eccleston, who has repeatedly said that he didnt like working on the show and even years backs stated he would not appear in a 50th anniversary special. it had nothing to do with the script so sorry to ruin your hateboner.
what? i have always known that eccleston disliked working on the show. i said in my post that he had said for years that he would not return to doctor who under any circumstances. and i certainly said nothing about my opinion on moffat. i think it's great he made it sound appealing enough that eccleston even considered it. eccleston has to my knowledge been gracious about the show itself, even while affirming that it was an environment he did not enjoy. besides, i'm capable of separating an actor from his character. my opinion of eccleston as a person would not affect my opinion of the ninth doctor as a character.

But as far as I know, no report has never mentioned it anything to do with the script (and I love Nine but some of the scripts in his series set the bar pretty low). People want to put the blame on the script but when its unlikely that had anything to do with the decision and it's more about his attitude, which I don't blame him for at all. Eccleston has said he just doesn't enjoy the " (fan) culture" around Doctor Who and so it doesn't really make sense he'd participate in a 50th anniversary that is basically a fanfest regardless of script quality or lack there of. While I am glad they did, I am personally surprised they even approached him to get him back considered what he's said in the past.
another nine fan here. it's sad that eccleston left the show with less-than-fond memories, but reading that he didn't like the fan culture... well, i completely understand.
