yep

i only rly watch elementary because lucy liu is adorable but i've never understood why ppl think it's SO MUCH BETTER than bbc sherlock

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
probably because the writers aren't blatant and outspoken sexists and homophobes

and because Elementary had a trans* character on it this week and treated it like it was completely normal and not some shocking or disgusting abnormality that plays into some criminal-of-the-week bullshit

for starters

also an asian main character instead of bbc sherlock's orientalism racism

Re: +1

being better than one show =/= most progressive thing on tv

Re: +1

idk i can't actually think of anything else currently airing that does any better

i say this as someone who doesn't watch the show and only sees screencaps on tumblr sometimes, so i might be biased

After last week's episode, it might actually be the most progressive show on network TV right now. One of the main characters is an Asian-American woman, and two thirds of the supporting characters are either racial or sexual minorities.

They just had a trans character played by a trans actor, and her relationship struggles and search for identity were treated identically to the way a cis character's would be. Elementary misses the mark sometimes, especially with casually misogynistic jokes and comments, but they sure do try.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
that wasn't what was being argued in this thread though

like, what you're replying to was in direct response to "i've never understood why ppl think it's SO MUCH BETTER than bbc sherlock"

sherlock had a really goddamn racist episode, elementary cast lucy liu as watson and isn't making the character a walking stereotype; sherlock has multiple "oh my gosh someone thinks we're a COUPLE!" scenes and that weird thing they did with irene adler, elementary actually managed to introduce a major trans* character and didn't make any jokes or make her a stereotype or a villain

like, i realize elementary isn't the best thing on tv, but it's definitely better than bbc sherlock, if only because bbc sherlock sets a really low bar

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Not the best thing on TV? Uh, Elementary is only not total shit because it has Lucy Liu in it. It's just mostly shit. It's a bland-ass cookie-cutter crime drama starring a guy doing a bad Benedict Cumberbatch impression that has fuck-all to do with Sherlock Holmes aside from a couple of character names. At least Sherlock actually seems like it might have something in common with what Conan Doyle was writing about. Oh, and if we're talking about fucking up Irene Adler then Moffat never shoved her in a refrigerator simply for the sake of upping the male lead's wangst points. Turning a female character who wasn't even remotely after the main character's cock and managed to completely stomp him at his own game when she was created in like 18-freaking-90 into the hero's MURDERED GIRLFRIEND is the precise opposite of progressive gender roles, SJWs.

I'm really amused that this was the comment you anon-failed on, of all things.

Oh, no, one thing out of a lot! How terrible!

It's still more progressive than White Boys Being White--I mean, Sherlock.

I also don't think you know what SJW means since you're the one bemoaning this entire show based on one thing and that it ~*doesn't match up to Conan Doyle's Writing*~. Guess what? 90% of Sherlock adaptations don't! Gasp, shock, horror!

I'd prefer the refrigerator than Mossats handling, tbh. Better storytelling overall.

Still bad, but way better.

I'm actually shocked they played off Miss Hudson being trans with like one sentence and no one made anything of it.

Fuck being better than Sherlock, that was better handled than most shows on tv right now. They'll probably fuck it up in later episodes, but right now I'm kind of impressed.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm shocked that they did that and actually cast a trans woman to play the role. Like, how many movies and TV shows have trans characters that are actually played by trans people? This might not be the only instance, but it's the only one I've ever heard about.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
not really related to elementary but yeah, i can't count the number of people at find_a_pb who want trans "looking" actors/actresses - like why not just pick someone who is actually trans to play your character, jfc

and then there was the whole thing about felicity huffman playing mtf which got so much ~amazing critical acclaim or w/e when it could have been done just as well if not better by someone who was actually trans instead of using a bunch of makeup to make her look the way they perceive trans people to be

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
I never watched BBC Sherlock so I can't compare, but lets be real Elementary would not be half as popular as it is if not for Lucy Liu.

idk about how progressive it is, but something about elementary!sherlock makes him more bearable than bbc!sherlock and i'm not sure what.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
it's probably because while he is still an undeniable asshole at times (also terrible roommate sometimes too), he'll acknowledge his flaws and he does show respect towards other people when they deserve it. He gets things wrong, but won't go, "FUCK I'M SUPPOSED TO BE THE SHIT" he'll just keep working harder to solve a case

he still thinks he's smarter than anyone else he's met though

elementary sherlock is an asshole, but he has more of a human, relatable quality than bbc sherlock.

/puts on TL;DR hat

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I am making myself obvious for like the three people I know cross-pollinate from my plurk to here, but I always found it this way: BBC!Holmes is borderline hollywood sociopathic; from the very little I could watch, he comes off as cold and unemotional and uncaring, and god help me I am so tired of watching shows about a cold unfeeling white dude learning to have ~feelings~.

Elementary!Sherlock is bad at social everything, but he experiences them just as much as anyone else does; they make a point of this. He is a broken man, a man with serious and kind of huge flaws and weaknesses, but he still experiences and shows an incredible emotional range. It makes him empathetic, not just sympathetic, to viewers much sooner on in the show's run, and while I can't speak to how much BBClock becomes such, I know that early on he might as well be a crime-solving robot.
