People who play hentai characters in games, even sex games. I just don't see how they would have enough of a developed personality to even be played properly.

It really depends on the canon for me. Most of them sure, but I've seen some out there from canons with porn that are perfectly appable (TYPE-MOON being the most infamous but there's also Saya no Uta, Little Busters!, Katawa Shoujo). Those tend to be few and far between though and have more substance than just boning your favorite girl.

Little Busters! wasn't originally an H-game. KEY stopped making their games H after kanon, and even then they had always released an all-ages one a little bit afterwards. In LB's case, they released the H version "Little Busters EXtasy" a good 3 or 4 years after the fact.

I know that, I was just having a hard time thinking of good examples off the top of my head (why did they even add porn into it in the first place?).

At the risk of outing myself, there are plenty of good examples out there! Anything produced by Liar-soft comes to mind (Translated are Forest, Sekien no Inganock, and Shikkoku no Sharnoth) -- if I'm remembering right, a big chunk of their staff is composed of writers, which is why they tend towards weird/plot-heavy games. Sakurai, the writer for those second two, honestly writes some of my favorite porn in the industry (though I might be biased because she's a woman writing for non-BL eroge, which I don't have a huge interest in).

Nitroplus (Saya, Hanachirasu, Demonbane, Kikokugai) is weird about their porn, but there's definitely more story than sex in most of their games; you could app from a translated one easy enough I think. Another huge favorite of mine is Innocent Grey (Kara no Shoujo), which is an all-around amazing company -- gorgeous music and art with great storylines despite the 18+ content (which is sort of iffy). If you can put up with the lead artist's giant foreheads and lolita fetish, Littlewitch (Quartett!, Period) is also good on story.

Then I'm not getting into KEY or TYPE-MOON. But basically, Anon, it's not nearly as bad as you think! You could almost say it's the other way around, but the thing is that games about boning your favorite girl are the ones that sell in the states, so those are the ones that people hear the most about.

Oh yeah I do know about all of that (I actually have been meaning to app Saya somewhere!) I was just saying the majority isn't like that (see 90% of 18+ VNs ever released, not just ones in the states) but there's appable instances out there. I've always been meaning to check out Forest but I heard that it's a wonderful concept kind of soiled by having too much porn.

I'd also like to add G-Senjou no Maou and Muv Luv Alternative (though the characters in that one weren't nearly as compelling as the plot itself) to that. G-Sen in fact has probably the lowest porn to story ratio I've probably ever seen. I'll also check out Kara no Shoujo once my big backlog is wiped out too.

I definitely apologize for the tl;dr in that case! G-Senjou and the Muv Luv series I totally forgot about though -- and I guess Sharin no Kuni on the subject of Akabei Soft2, but I haven't really gotten into it yet despite it being the kind of thing I normally like.

Some of the sex in Forest is necessary for the story (though it could've presented those points in a different way without losing anything, I think), but for the most part it's really obviously shoehorned in to make the game sell since it came out in the early 2000s. But that said, I didn't feel like there was a super huge amount, but I'm probably desensitized to it? Anyway, it's pretty subjective -- the only thing I'd be wary of is that there's a decent (3 scenes, 4 or 5 depending on how you interpret a character design) amount of sex with underage girls, and a few of the scenes are written a little creepily?

But overall it was a pretty fun ride and Nagatsuki is a beautiful wonderful character and if you can stomach all of that, I'd recommend it! Kara no Shoujo, on the other hand, has a fair amount of gore), but if you want to app Saya someplace, I don't think it'll be anything you can't handle.

No it's fine! It's nice to see people who have actually gave VNs a try beyond 07th, Katawa Shoujo and Type Moon stuff.

I see, I'll give it a try. I'm just used to sex mostly being only done at the end of a route if at all and tend to use the ctrl key for it. And don't worry about me being unable to take the gore, I don't think anything can get as gore filled as Saya no Uta.

It's going to make myself very obvious (but I'm curious who you are too since nobody I know knows Muv Luv outside of a friend who introduced it to me), but for Saya I want to send Saya to City of Ariel. It looks like a perfect place for a loli Cthulhu. Of course I still need to canon review since I haven't played it since the unofficial patch came out. And what better way to review then to buy the finally domestically released version.

Gosh, Saya would be really amazing in CoA! I don't play anyone there (though I've been mulling it over and might throw someone in come summer), but that is a beautiful idea and I can only approve. I think I might give it another read once the official release comes out too.

Some characters are perfectly playable, such as characters from Katahane. Those are usually just games with stories that happen to have sex.

Hentai game doesn't mean porn porn porn porn. Not that american fans will realize, lol
