the trans!chihiro supporters are like "you just CAN'T DEAL with the idea of a trans character!!! TRANSPHOBIA!!!!!!!" it's so fucking annoying. they also attack ANY cis person (OR TRANS person for that matter) with a differing opinion.
when it's blatantly canon chihiro identifies as male. this is seen through monobear (even if an unreliable narrator), alter ego, sdr2, official profiles saying he'd planned on "coming out" as a boy... just because he wears a skirt and people label him as a girl = trans. it's so fucking offensive and these blind baffoons can't see that. "YOU CAN'T DEAL WITH A TRANS CHARACTER" when the character isn't even trans. and then when called out on canon representation, they twist words or say "LET US HAVE OUR HEADCANON" when you can't necessarily have such a headcanon when canon explicitly contradicts it. it's like having a headcanon romeo was in love with mercutio when canon shows him in love with juliet. bad example, but whatever. an au would make more sense (though still stupid imo), but headcanon? no.
i just hate that people can't see that chihiro is male. they cannot fathom a boy crossdressing for psychological issues (that he wanted to overcome) and is more than his gender identity. i have a lot of feelings.
Oh god, all of this. Also, when trans!Chihiro people insist that Mondo killed him in a fit of TRANSPANIC! Fuck that. Someone on tumblr even went through the canon and posted examples proving that Chihiro is male and got shit on for that, too.
"glad to know that people are so disgusted that a character might be like me that you have to go through the canon to prove that he's not"
It wouldn't be so bad if they wouldn't insist that Trans!Chihiro is canon.
It's utterly ridiculous how people are saying Mondo killed Chihiro because of transpanic. Mondo explicitly states that he killed him out of jealousy and paranoia, not because of Chihiro revealing his secret.
And what really frustrates me are the people who say "Chihiro is canonically trans, but Chihiro was a victim of bad writing because the writers are cismen!!!" ...except Chihiro has never once said he wants to be a girl, or said anything about identifying as female.
Also, when trans!Chihiro people insist that Mondo killed him in a fit of TRANSPANIC!
Whaaaaaat the fuck. I'm pretty sure that Mondo even arranged the placement of Chihiro's lifeless body to try keeping the others from finding out about his secret as much as possible, and not to mention Mondo clearly said he snapped on Chihiro because the tiny little kid was shaping up to be braver than Mondo was and may ever be, so wouldn't that disprove the "TRANSPANIC" bullshit?
yep, but a lot of them write mondo's story off as a lie like monobear's because he's chihiro's murderer. even though his story is the same in the manga and counting his story as a lie makes the case much worse than it's meant to be.
it's p. sad since mondo being someone who's willing to go so far to keep chihiro's secret a secret like he promised and ending up killing him in a fit of jealousy for his mental strength makes me think he's not the kind of guy who'd kill someone in a fit of transpanic at all.
That's really one of the biggest things I dislike about a lot of the "Chihiro is trans" people. If they want to think Chihiro is trans, fine. But when they start to change the motivations (and kind of, personalities) of OTHER CHARACTERS to suit their version of canon, it makes me angry. While Mondo is a rough kind of guy, he's not a bigot or a transphobe just because they want him to be.
Honestly, I don't care if someone thinks Chihiro is trans. At least it has a bit more basis than, say, insisting Dave Strider is since I know that's popular fan theory too. I can understand wanting trans or genderqueer or genderfucky characters in media, and I can relate to Chihiro's issues a bit being genderqueer myself. However, I do accept the fact that canon says he is male with extreme self-esteem issues and know no amount of wishing will help otherwise.
However, the assdumping on both sides has got to stop. I'm getting real mad at the I AM A REAL TRANSWOMAN AND YOU ARE BLATANTLY CISSEXIST FOR STATING CANON AND I HOPE YOU ROT (If the tumblr you're talking about is Zemeth's I've been rolling my eyes at this too.) I'm honestly REALLY FUCKING GLAD they didn't pull a transphobic panic kill with Mondo which is what might have happened if Chihiro was fully trans. It's too easy to go into the "Filthy trap grrr die shemale" trope with writing and seeing DR avoid it entirely is a breath of fresh air. The last thing we need is yet another instance of this.
However I'm also annoyed at the anti-SJW types insisting anyone who supports trans or genderqueer causes or headcanon as evil canon hating betrayers trying to get icky gender issues into something as needing to die in a fire and leave the fandom forever. Not that that's what is happening here, but I'm also seeing a lot of it. It's shit on every side.
the problem with making chihiro trans (outside of it being a vehicle for vehement sjw-types to cry transphobia on those that disagree) is that is erases the main issue that was the whole point of chihiro's character: sexism and gender roles in japan. weak = female strong = male and how it was easier for chihiro, as a weak male, to pass himself as female so that he didn't get picked on.
because it ties into gender roles, it's easy to see how people can grasp and say that he's trans, but the text does a pretty solid job of trying to make the real issue clear - he plans on telling everyone he's male, he's realized that "strength" and "weakness" are more relative than concrete, etc. By making it a trans issue, essentially they are ignoring the underlying japanese social issue and pushing a set of western values on a non-western situation. it's not so much transphobic or shying away from the issue of being trans that chihiro is cis, but rather addressing a completely different issue that gets ignored when people insist he is.
This. I wouldn't mind so much if Chihiro's situation was left more open to interpretation, but in canon it's pretty clearly spelled out that his arc is meant to deal with societal pressures about gender roles. I guess it's not surprising that Western fans will see things differently, but people need to keep in mind that Japanese works will look at things in a different way than we do over here.
this. i thought they did a great job at handling that issue too and it's such a problem in japan that it's refreshing to see how this series handles it (not just in that case but in general). it's easy to see why people grasp at the idea that chihiro's trans but i don't think anyone should use that to erase the actual issue and then keep crying transphobia.
doesn't the fanbook even say that he's a guy and was going to come out about that? even if someone thinks the game was ambiguous about him being cis, that isn't.
yes. multiple sources (actually also including in-game text that talks about his telling everyone and having accepted the fact that he doesn't have to hide anymore) refer to him as male and as identifying as male, and any time he comes up in discussion in sdr2, he is referred to very clearly as male (and there are a number of factors that indicate that these are his decisions/wishes and not characters' opinions).
I actually agree with this, I'm just saying I don't care if people still want him to be on the trans spectrum since I can see where it can comfort someone to see themselves in a character like this, since I am on the spectrum too and know a few who are. I'm well aware of all the dynamics it'd fuck over, which is why I said I'm glad in the end they didn't decide to make him canon trans, but people seeing and wishing for more tells me a lot about the state of media and trans awareness and how we treat them that I just am okay letting this one be for now. It's not worth it.
tbh this whole thing probably does say something about how there really aren't a lot of trans characters in fiction who are portrayed positively or even accurately. it's pretty unfortunate.
it's not transphobic to see chihiro as cis but getting buttmad about it and attempting to prove it like a control freak ends up being transphobic, just like vehement slash/femslash haters who go out of their way to prove characters are straight end up using homophobic arguments. just get over it.
IMHO people are free to think of chihiro as trans as long as they acknowledge he's not canonically trans. every person i've seen who assumed that has been the kind to viciously attack or slander people for sticking to his canon gender.
otoh people shouldn't attack others just for headcanoning chihiro as trans either. just having that headcanon isn't a problem and shouldn't be a reason to attack anyone.
