they might "look white" to you, however, they are not meant to be white, or even representative of white people
they have yellow hair and blue eyes because they are cartoon characters. same reason why some of them have green hair and purple eyes. japanese people see those "white looking characters" as being japanese. they look white to you because you are white, or are used to seeing representations of white people in american cartoons. you see them as looking like yourself, or whatever you're most familiar with. this principle also applies to japanese viewers. they do not look white to the people in japan watching the show.
Then app some in? Do you like Community? Or Doctor Who? Or Torchwood? Or any J-drama ever? Maybe you really liked Asoka or Lagaan (not the anime). Play a character from there. Or hey, what about movies? Pacific Rim has some great PoC in it.
It's not up to the game, it's up to the people apping in. Instead of crying about it, app someone and play them.
I think it is a little intellectually dishonest to put anime and manga (which is almost entirely made about Japanese people by Japanese people for Japanese people) in the same category as Western media for representation of non-white peoples. By that standard, Japanese media is just as homogeneous as Western media, if not more so. I can usually find a fair number of POC in most of the Western media I consume, whereas I seldom find a non-Japanese character in the Japanese media I consume. It makes sense, given that Japan is a lot more homogenous than the North-Western world, but it also makes "anime is diverse!" a bit of a cheap argument.
While it still represents non-white characters, whether in fantasy universes or not, it is a bit ridiculous to suggest that almost exclusively Japanese representation is somehow inherently inclusive. It still seldom represents black or brown people, or even other East Asian people. Having a game that is 49% [Fantasy] White and 49% [Fantasy] Japanese and 2% "Other" is only scarcely more diverse than a game that is 99% [Fantasy] White and 1% Other.
Is it ridiculous for games to ban anime/manga characters? Absolutely and enthusiastically yes, because anime/manga is a medium (or a regional take on a medium), not a genre. It is asinine to paint all anime/manga with the same brush, given that there are series for just about every subject, sensibility, genre and target audience.
Is it somehow a denial of fair representation? In my opinion, not really.
You can't say anime characters are all 100% Japanese therefore banning anime is racism without by extension saying that anime is inherently racist as of itself. In the rare cases they do use characters from other cultures or religions, they're massive stereotypes, and black characters in particular get treated like a joke.
You missed the point. You're pushing one aspect of Japanese culture (and Korean to a lesser extent) and saying the denial of it is racist. Maybe I'd rather see actual PoC rather than rainbow haired 2-D drawn figures.
Asian =/= anime. Please stop pushing that association, THAT is racist.
