Being in Japan doesn't mean the character can't be white. They could be white raised in Japan. I don't think there's need for as much anger as people express.

How often do we get characters like those in a multicoloured cast though?

I'm not saying that the character is really white I'm just saying it's really not so far fetched or impossible or really very insulting to associate a character with those features with being white, even in a multi-colored hair/eye cast. It's really nothing to be offended about, it's a natural association to make. But there's quite a bit of butthurt on both sides of this argument whenever I see it.
