I mean, do you really go LOLOLOLOL in public when you're not on the computer? No, right? That would be stupid. I think there's a difference between being so completely ridiculous and just having a really long and hard laugh about something.
I'm not sure how else to explain it, but I feel like there are other ways to express your amusement/excitement besides XDDDDDD and LOLOLOLOL.
i don't think there's a real equivalent to LOLOLOLOL in real life though, except maybe falling out of your chair and becoming a weepy giggling mess on the ground at every opportunity
since we're not really communicating normally, a lot of people like to blow their reactions up to make their reactions absolutely clear to the other person and not risk mixing signals
"haha" or "lol" can have people doubting whether the other person is interested or got that they were joking, but "LMAOOOOO" or "ALKDFALDSFJA LOL" makes it totally, blindingly, excruciatingly clear
