i think we're just gonna have to agree to disagree anon, since i do think people-- employers or employees, can and should make the choices they think is best for themselves. so long as irrational supports its former employees in the transition and provides them with the severance pay they deserve and great references (all of which i don't see why not), i think they've done what they should

that said, what's the valve model?

that's cool! like I said, while I am frustrated at the situation, I also know that I'm being pretty idealistic.

Working at Valve is something like the holy grail of HR treatment. You assign yourself your own projects, flexible hours, flexible work spaces, you can leave a project at any time should you need rest for health or other reasons, you are under no pressure to meet most deadlines (which might explain the infamous "Valve time" we joke about), etc etc

good luck. the HR is so good that positions in the company open up only rarely. like, seriously, a guy tried to quit because his long term health complications would keep him from working for well over a year and GabeN refused to let him walk away, he just kept him on payroll.

which is awesome, but yeah, good luck getting a job there.

it would be fantastic if every studio could work the way valve does, but it just isn't feasible for a lot of them. it's a rare developer that can be its own producer and distributor.
