The death scene was super-fishy in the movie anyway, I'm pretty sure Whedon wanted to leave himself some wiggle room to bring him back if he decided he wanted to.

We pretty much have nothing to go on that Coulson ACTUALLY died except Fury's word, which was made highly suspect within the same damn group of scenes anyway. Where did Loki nail him anyway?
