I kind of hate the fandom creaming its pants over the confirmation that Phil Coulson will show up in the SHIELD show in some way. For one thing, YMMV and I personally found the character a bland serious guy in a suit with a superhero fanboy aspect tacked on at the last minute to guilt two of the Avengers into carrying on the good fight.

But more objectively, Phil's appearance in SHIELD really better not be bringing him back to life for two reasons: first, because it robs his death scene in the Avengers of impact (oh it's okay, he lived), and second, because it's bringing one of the most cancerous superhero genre moves into the cinematic universe. You know, killing off characters for shock value and then bringing them back to life later because...oh, well, they're popular.

Hell, Couson's not even that important. He's one of those minor characters created for the movies that happens to have gathered a fan following. It's not like they killed off an iconic character and are going ohshitohshit backpedal. We don't need to start the genre's revolving door between life and death for this guy.

Just, god.

tbh his death scene was kind of robbed in the film anyway seeing as Fury lied about the Captain America cards to give the team a "stake" or whatever his reasoning had been. That, and it felt like a standard Whedon death scene and for me, Whedon deaths feel cheap.

But mainly, I'm not surprised that Coulson will show up in the TV show seeing as Clark Gregg is known as a television actor and voices the cartoon version of Coulson. I wouldn't mind it if he's revealed to be alive in the TV show (as opposed to it being a flashback scenario), but they just never bring him back to the movies ever again.

You're right, there's definitely a strong style to how Whedon deaths happen. I liked Coulson's better than, say, Wash in Firefly, but there's definitely stylistic carryover and if one doesn't work for you the others probably won't either. Fury using Coulson's death to try tying a fracturing group together seems like an interesting move on the surface because it's easier to care about someone you know dying than a vague "people out there are in trouble." It is kind of hamfisted though, especially since Cap's faced comrades dying and moved on before, and Tony's whole motive in heroing has been acting out of a sense of responsibility for people getting hurt.

I guess I just don't trust that if Coulson is alive in the TV show, they wouldn't put him in a movie somehow for a drama point about "omg how could Fury manipulate us like that?"

His death being faked, if anything, lends itself to the fact fury is an asshole IMO. Which is something I feel is under appreciated in the fandom. Faking someone's death to get the team to respond how he wants is exactly the kind of shit fury would pull.

The death scene was super-fishy in the movie anyway, I'm pretty sure Whedon wanted to leave himself some wiggle room to bring him back if he decided he wanted to.

We pretty much have nothing to go on that Coulson ACTUALLY died except Fury's word, which was made highly suspect within the same damn group of scenes anyway. Where did Loki nail him anyway?
