I think sometimes there is thought and people deliberately take a character into a seemingly incompatible environment because they think it's a unique way to develop the character. I've taken some characters who you wouldn't have thought of as being good in horror games into horror games and developed them in really fun, interesting ways.
Sometimes, like one of the other anons said, they're just following a cast or their friends.
And sometimes it's just, "I like this game and I like this character, so I'm going to app this character at this game." without any thought for whether or not the character is appropriate to the game.
