It goes both ways, anon. You're saying that people should stop throwing fits when artists draw the characters in ways that aren't the mainstream white, skinny, etc. fashion.
And that's totally valid, but I think the anon was trying to say that people should stop throwing fits about an artist's interpretation period, regardless of the artist's interpretation or the fan's interpretation.
Unless you're ordering a commission, you really have no right or say as to what an artist chooses to draw or how they choose to draw it. It's their art. If you don't like, just move on and go look at someone else's.
hey you're right that I think we should let all artists have their own interpretations
on the other hand an artist is about 50000x times more likely to get harassed for drawing poc kids than for drawing white kids so forgive me if I don't shed a tear over all the many many many artists who draw white kids, or the people who think that white is the only canon way to draw them, or that if you deviate too much from "pasty white" then you don't really love the canon.
Just to be perfectly clear, I'm not saying 'oh boo hoo think about the white people' or whatever it is that you might be implying with the second half of your response.
I'm saying this as a friend of several artists who have gotten ask boxes full of "It's cool that you're drawing that, but you should draw this instead". Once or twice is not anything to complain about, but when you get a lot of those backhanded sorts of compliments that aren't really compliments, or people who straight up say "stop drawing that and draw this instead" it starts getting frustrating. And this doesn't just go for race. It's for anything under the sun: race, size, shape, even the specific character(s) being drawn.
Honestly, I've never seen a more entitled fandom when it comes to fanart and the people who draw it. Some people just get downright nasty. For many of these artists, they draw what they like because it's fun and because they want to and for no other reason, and it starts becoming tedious when they get people trying to take control of that creative outlet.
The point: Just let artists enjoy their work. If you want something specific of a character and aren't seeing it, go draw it yourself or commission it yourself. Don't harass the artist for not doing things in whatever fashion you want if that's not what they want to do.
ok anon I can agree with you, people need to calm their goddamn tits in this fandom with their weird entitlement and thinking they get to dictate shit, I think my mind is just mostly on The Race Problem because the tarot deck stuff really shone a light on that shitty dark corner of the entitlement labyrinth
I wouldn't want someone rolling up to me and telling me to stop doodling indian/polynesian jade and john, but I also wouldn't want someone telling me to stop drawing redhaired, white, freckly striders
because it's my art go away.
so I definitely agree, sorry for getting titchy but holy god this fandom is really on a "not racist buuuuuut" kick lately so I kneejerked
It's okay, I can understand how the race topic can be a sensitive one. I'm just glad we could come to an understanding. :)
It'd be really great if the majority of the fandom could get the idea too, but... That might be hoping for a bit much. I just really hope we don't end up scaring all of our amazing artist out of the fandom.
